Anyone know which is a better choise and why? The Barrett model 99 or the 99-1. |

The heavy barrelled 99 is more accurate due to the heavy, 20+lb barrel. The 99-1, with its lighter, shorter, fluted barrel, is much more portable. It all depends on what you want it for. If you don't have a place to shoot 1,000 yards or more I would go with the 99-1. The 99-1 kicks a bit more than the HB 99, but either of them are controllable. I have shot the 99 and I find its recoil similar to a 12 gauge, though prone shooting doesn't allow your upper body to move under recoil like firing a shotgun offhand would. I've not seen anyone shoot the 99-1 offhand, but I suspect shooting a 24 pound rifle standing up would not be easy. My personal choice would be the 99-1, due to its lighter weight, and the fact that I have nowhere to exploit the HB's long range capabilities around here where I shoot. |
