I took my Barrett 99 out for the first time since I bought it over a month ago. Yeah I know, first no case, then bad weather, then bad work schedule. Anyways I could have swore as the first shot ignited and exited the muzzle brake I blacked out! Hmmm, teeth rattled a bit as well. As a permanent smile started to develope, I pushed another Talon into the chamber and VA-VOOM! (insert your best 50bmg sound) again things went dark for a nano-second. This is gonna be fun!!!

I went to Lytle creek range www.maxyum.com/lytlecreek/index.htm Not the best but worked for a me as a newbie. I also wanted to check out West End Gun Club on the way out. A friend joined so I wanted to see what they offered. I think you're the same "Shawn" that Ben Herrera told me of the Red Mountain shoots?

Yup, that's me. We are going in two weeks, if you want to shoot out to 2000 yards+ let me know. Send me a PM with an email addy and I will give you more info.

Where did you see Ben? Angeles or at the Creek?

Actually I'll see Ben today, he bought a Starlight case from me that a vendor accidently sent two to me when I bought one.  He mentioned the shoot when I talked to him on the phone.

Help a brother out, how was the recoil on a 22 pound rifle? I am on the fence, with the group buy going and an Armalite staring at me. Cant decide.

I'd say my 99 kicked about as hard as a 12 gauge with 3 inch magnum shells. I lost track of the pad at one time and let it get too close to my shoulder where the bone is and took a pretty good shot to it. Seems every shot after hurt a little more because of it. Keep it in the muscle area and you'll be OK.

I know what you're talking about - I put about 100 rounds through an 82A1 on Saturday - if you shoot with plugs only the blast is so intense you white out for a fraction of a second...sort of like getting punched in the face without the actual impact..

Plugs only? If I lose the plugs and go with just the muffs the "whiteout" will completely go away? My first few rounds I had both plugs and muffs, not knowing how loud it was going to be. Later I went with just muffs and the severity of the "whiteout" did lighten up. I could hold a sight picture in the scope a lot longer.

Excellent description!!

I never did shoot with muffs only...I shot with plugs only the first 5 shots or so, then added the muffs.  I'd be afraid that the muffs alone would slightly unseal because of my cheekweld, and then I'd have to sell my stereo system...

Is it me or does the 82A1 leave you with less of a headache then the M99???

Don't know..I've never shot a 99.

I can offer an explanation..
the m82 has two things that help ease up the kick...

first its a semi auto, and we know that generally semis kick less than a bolt (duh) since some of the force is used in cycling the damn bolt...

next the 82 has a springlike barrel (im sorry, i have no clue what youre supposed to properly call it) that moves back and then springs back forward when a round is fired to help absorb the kick...

but if we're talking about shock from the blast i have no clue
