Well, today I picked up NIB SCAR 16S FDE and was very excited until I found what appeared to be a "rust" looking spots all over the rifle.
Foolish enough, I tried some gun oil to wipe it down but it looks like the problem is anodizing itself. I called FNH and all they say was... we will take a look. I asked a few more questions, such as how long it will take before I get it back, will it cover under the warranty... but they just kept saying "we will take a look." I will contact the seller and return the rifle if this type of anodizing issue is not covered under the warranty. Will FN fix this anodizing issue under the warranty? |

Personally, that's an incredibly minor blemish and it's not something worthy of all this.
They are not going to re-anodize it, their "fix" will likely be a new upper receiver if not a whole new rifle which, either way, will have a new serial number and will have to go to your FFL. It'll take a month to deal with this, at least. Just not worth it, Your gun will get worn and scratched through normal use, and oil is going to stain the anodizing anyway. This is nothing. |

Yeah... I consider gun as a tool but it just bugs me when you see this spots all over the rifle that cost $2.3k+.
The picture is only part of the blemish... it's just all over the rifle. Quoted:

Clean and lube it, then take it to the range for the afternoon. When it comes back it won't bother you anymore. Something to add to the first post, the anodizing process itself is highly imperfect and almost always has blemishes like this. What you might get back from FNH may well have worse blemishes. |

Just checking but is it actually rust or is it dried on shipping grease? My 16S had spatter from shipping grease on it that came off with some hoppes and some elbow grease.
Also, isn't the SCAR upper extruded aluminum? I could be wrong but aluminum doesn't actually rust, it corrodes... and when it does it looks gray and not brown. Or at least that is what I've seen. |

I would send it back and do the wait, it may take a month or two but you'll get what you paid for. Remember if it bugs you now it will bug you later. I think you are right about that. This is my second SCAR 16S and my other 16S FDE's finish is perfect with no visible imperfection. If it's only one side or one area, then I may be able to live with it but it's literally all over the place... inside and out, too. Since I already have an SCAR 16S in use, wait is not a issue with me... |

Just to settle the rust point the upper receiver is made of Aluminum not Iron/Steel so it will not rust. It may surface oxidize corrode but you will not get rust.
Also I have a black SCAR 17 and my AR15 receivers have minor blemishes in them if you look close enough anodizing is not a perfect finish and when it is it is rare. Look at 5 different AR lowers that are consecutive Serials they will all have some variance in the finish might even be different colors. |
