I saw this online:
http://www.defensereview.com/are-the-fn-scar-weapons-mk16-and-mk17-necessary-and-do-we-really-need-to-replace-the-colt-m4m4a1-carbine/ Specifically: Defense Review recently spoke to one of our professional contacts in the tactical firearms community, and he told us on the phone that the MK16/SCAR-L is for all practical purposes “dead”, meaning that it’s not likely to survive for very long, and that the SCAR weapons are continuing to experience teething problems in the field, i.e. breaking down. We don’t have confirmation/verification on this yet, so it’s just a rumor at this point. Anything’s possible, but we’ve spoken with people in the U.S. military Special Operations community who prefer either the AR-config HK416 (also written HK 416) for a gas piston/op-rod carbine/SBR solution or a good old-fashioned DGI Colt SOPMOD M4A1 Carbine or MK18 CQBR SBR for a DGI solution. For real? This was published back in May of 09'. Any stock in this? |

| I saw that a while ago and and wouldn't take much stock in it. The only issues that could kill it are budget cuts, a surprise win for a different rifle in 2010 or numerous failure problems reported in the field which don't seem to be happening right now. The biggest report I see is guys getting bit by the charging handle which is just a training issue. |

I don't believe the SCAR is dead but it definately didn't get "adopted" yet.. Buying a couple thousand units is a test ..
Rewind years back.. The hk416 was supposedly the new rifle for socom and they bought a couple thousand units and nothing was adopted. The XM8 was even bought, not in numbers but still thought to be the new socom weapon I think it will ultimately come down to the budget not being big enough to switch to a new weapon, especially with this unsupportive president destroying military funding numbers |

I read this same article a while back and then I got to the last paragraph that said this...
Editor’s Note: Mike Pannone (a.k.a. Michael Pannone) is the author of the M16/M4 Handbook and HK416 Handbook (also written HK-416 Handbook), which are invaluable resources to anyone who owns and/or uses an M4/M4A1 Carbine, tactical AR-15 carbine, or HK416 respectively. They’re also worthy additions to any tactical firearms library, even if you don’t own or use any of those weapons. Not saying this dismisses what he said but it seems to me that he already has a position on the subject so I had to take it with a grain of salt. |

I believe this pretty much answers your question.... Whenever someone speaks of 'unnamed sources' I place as much faith in them as cracking open a fortune cookie. I would also consider this before drawing a conclusion based on one opinionated article... Quoted:

I've also heard that the SCAR-L is going to be a limited lifespan weapon, but not because it's not working or not liked. A 14.5" SCAR has the same lethality issues that plague the M4 carbine, so it wasn't planned to be around a long time. A gas-piston doesn't make a 62-grain bullet hit harder, fragment or yaw any better than the DI M4. What's the real purpose? Solve the perceived reliability issues and you still have the same lethality issues when the dust clears.
The SCAR-H is going to the be the large scale direction they're likely going in. |
