Disclaimer: I am well aware of legal ramifacations this is for discussion only. Ok I know I should know the answer to this but, I see alot of M-16 LPKs, bolt carriers on the market. Could'nt the criminal type make a working gun with just these 2 complete kits?

no, because you still need a complete upper and lower receiver.

Sure, but it's not just a drop-in. The criminal type would also need access to a mill to modify the lower, and a drill press, etc.

Note that criminal types can also legally buy all the components to make a bomb, or crystal meth.

Now, there also is the legal concept of "constructive possession" –– i.e., if you have all the components necessary to manufacture an illegal item, you are in "constructive possession" of that item. ATF/DOJ has successfully prosecuted individuals for only owning all the components required to assemble an M16, an SBR, etc.

So an individual may possess an AR. An individual may also possess a full-auto LPK. But one person possessing both is committing a felony, unless they have an alternate legal use for the LPK (as in, they also own a registered M16 to use them in).

HTH.

IIRC, there have been successfully prosecuted cases where individuals have intentionally introduced FA parts into a semi gun to create hammer follow through slam fire conditions.  This is not true full auto, but creates a dangerous situation that can mimic it under the right circumstances.  I can't remember the name in the  most recent case, but the guy literally admitted on the stand he was trying to do just that.  The point being is that you can get into trouble far before you have a properly functioning MG.  This is a step beyond what Tony has mentioned above.

Bottom line: if you own an AR15, it is very, very, very bad juju to also have an FA FCG.

So what "news organization" are you with MSNBC, Dateline, CNN, ABC, CBS?

No. You'd still have to drill the lower. Which is the act of making a machine gun.

I'm going with yes they would have a working gun. Working in the sense that it might dbl or even triple at times but it would still be semi auto most of the time.  What they would have is know as a full house = all the full auto parts with the exception of the sear. Which is most commonly used with a RDIAS.  Besides AK 47s are much easier to convert to full auto  than AR15s are.  The criminal element is well aware of this. The Hollywood hold up is a good example of that.

I would be relatively easy for someone with the right equipment and technical skills.  However, most criminals are idiots.  Especially the ones who actually shoot people.  Dose anyone have the stats on violent crime with FA?  I saw them on here once and they were for all practical purposes zero.

It is for this reason I really like having Colt ARs with the larger .170 inch hammer and trigger pins. A fullauto fire control group does not fit these rifles. Makes me more comfortable having M16 spares.  All of my Colt 6920s and my 6933 have the large FCG pins.
