I got a call last night from a guy asking if I want to buy an M-16 machine gun. Of course I'm interested.

So I go to look at it today, and now I have more questions than answers.

It's an older lower, no fence or markings on the right side. The left is marked "Colt AR-15 CAL. .223 Model SP1 SER. SP77XXX"

It has SAFE and FIRE markings.

Thinking back to my Army days, I recall, SAFE, SEMI, and AUTO. Also they were marked M-16, not AR-15.

From what I've found it was made in 1977, but I can't find anything saying it's full auto.

So, do I have a great deal, or do I run and hide my dogs for even looking at this.

It sounds like someone converted an AR-15 semi-auto (i.e. the SP in the serial number) into full auto and didn't mark the lower to show "auto". As long as it has legal paperwork it should be safe to buy.

Hmm... Thanks, I'll ask about that.

Another thing, to go along with the safe and fire markings, it only has 2 positions, safe and fire of some sort.

Papers/stamp w/o these run, run, run!!

was it drilled for a 3rd pin hole?

Does the selector not even rotate to where auto should be?

Is this guy calling a AR15 a M16?

What is the price on it? I'm guessing its a SP1 that the guy is calling an M16.
