Hello,

If I was able to get a M16 for the $12K+ it would cost, can I swap the upper? I really don't like the old m16 look & would prefer a 14.5" M4 type of upper. Can I also replace the stock?  Can I change out parts as I see fit as long as the lower doesn't get modified?
Would I need anything legally to do that?(besides the normal paperwork)
Thanks

Machine gun status trumps all - you may configure it as you like.

You can make it look like this if you want.

WOW, that is amazing!  Someone really went to a lot of trouble to create that "thing".  It's even better than a lot of the Photoshopped ...ahem... "creations" I've seen.

...with a few notable exceptions. Any sound suppression must be taxed on it's own. It must not be configured to fit the definition of a destructive device.  Any upper which is considered a firearm in and of itself (there is one in production) may not be used on it.

By that logic said "upper" couldn't be used on ANY lower, MG or otherwise.

Do whatever you like to it. That's half the fun of owning a M16.

It's not my logic. It's the ATFE's logic.

Do whatever you want with your M16.  Mine has spent the last few years looking like this (9mm upper courtesy of TSC Machine):
