Well hows it going guys,

been off the site for a few months or so.  Just been real busy.  Anyways I decided its time for another MG.  The M16, AC556F, Uzi need a new buddy.  So a good buddy is selling me his Reising sub gun.  I love this little thing.  Runs like a champ.  I started the paperwork today and should have it all out by end of the week or so.

I will keep you guys posted.

I've been looking at these.  Are spare mags hard to come by?

Congrats, Rob!

I had a Reising and loved it. Only sold it because it was a minty  pre-WWII example, and was just too valuable to shoot....

The USMC guns had issues mostly because like many prewar guns, they were hand-fitted when built, and the USGI practice of cleaning them by stripping, throwing all the parts of several into a bucket of solvent, then drawing out parts at random and reassembling doesn't work for hand-fitted firearms. But if you buy one that is set up correctly and runs fine, they are reliable and fun SMGs.

The ROF is a little high, particularly for an expensive-to-feed .45. No simple way to slow it down except by hand loading mild loads. Firing pins do get brittle, and the rectangular-shaped action bar also can be fragile. Replacement firing pins are out there, but if you bend the action bar, you'll either need to straighten it or build a new one. The flash hiders are also prone to break off fins, but that is cosmetic, and again, repros are out there.

Wolff makes a good set of springs, but the Wolff recoil spring may speed up the ROF...

Reising made two magwells, one for 12-rounder mags only, and the other for factory 20's and aftermarket 30's. This is the magwell you want, and the factory 20's and aftermarket 30's generally run well. There also are aftermarket 20's out there, in two basic grades: The better ones run fine once you adjust the mag lips; the cheaper ones, made of thinner steel, do not hold the feed lip adjustments and are a PITA. All were made abroad and imported under several names, so the best way to sort them is either by looking at the steel thickness, or by trial-and-error.

Again, they are cool SMGs and were very well-made with potentially very accurate barrels. Have fun!

The Christie 30 rd mags run about $85 each.

Orig. mags run $100-$125 each.
I don't mess with the aftermarket ones.

I've got 1 12 rd mag that I use for new shooters.

Thanks!  That's a helpful link from an aftermarket support point of view.

Are the Christie mags in the reliable category?

The Christie mags are better quality than the factory originals.

However, many Reising mags –– factory or Christie's –– require tuning the feed lips to properly position the feeding round, because of variations in Reising magwell geometry from gun to gun.

When I bought my Christie's I had issues, and called Ken Christie. He gave me step-by-step instructions on how to tweak the feed lips to fit my gun; I did so, and they fed 100%. BTW, since they are made from fairly strong steel, once tuned to your gun, they stay that way forever (or at least for many, many thousands of rounds –– I've never heard of a working mag going "out of tune").

FWIW, some of the imported aftermarket mags appear to be made from the correct steel, too, and Ken's tuning tips turned those into reliable feeders for me. And since they only cost $30 each ...

I don't have a source right now for the "good" aftermarket 20-round mags, but I'll keep an eye out if anyone wants me to.

I'll add to that, Christie stands behind his stuff as well.  I had a pre-'94 mag that had the brazing on the rear of the mag crack, causing the feedlips to spread.  I showed it to Ken's son at their booth at KCR and he just handed over a new one, and said if I ever had any other issues to just send them in for a replacement as well.

I've got 7 or 8 Christie mags, a few of the 20-round aftermarket mags, and a few originals.  They all seem to run well.  It just seems the gun its self it temperamental.  Some days it runs like a top, and others, not so much.  It's anyone's guess which day it will want to play nice.

Garrett you described my Reising perfectly whenever you said temperamental . Some days she will run on forever and other days she is a PINTA .
I got lucky and got a parts kit with an extra bolt , so when the firing pin breaks I just change to the other bolt .
The parts kit bolt fit right in and works as well as the original .
OP Numrich gun parts has spare parts and I would recommend  getting some replacement firing pins .

Tonk,

If you turn over any rocks and find some let me know, please.

Chas, if I come across any good aftermarket mags, I'll grab 'em for ya.

And FYI, this is my old Reising I was telling you about earlier today. Shipped to PPD on Dec. 26, 1941, 19 days after Pearl Harbor, to defend the vital Pittsburgh steel plants against Axis saboteurs. That's the original Fed Labs hard case supplied with the SMG by H&R. I hope Rob will forgive the thread hijack, in the name of eye candy:
