This has probably been asked before, but can't find anything specific. If I register a lower as a SBR, can i still switch uppers? Reason i am asking is, i want a .556 sbr, but i'd also like to have one of the 11" pdw ar57 uppers, but not enough to register another lower for it.

Yes, you can swap short uppers as long as you maintain the same length barrel on hand that's listed on your Form 1.

That's either incorrect or confusing.  You can put ANY length upper on a registered SBR.  It can be much shorter or much longer than the original configuration.  However, ATF requests that you tell them if you permanently change the gun's configuration-as in you sell off the original upper and no longer have one of that length.  This allows ATF to keep the NFA database current and correct, as required by law.

Once it has the tax stamp, you can put ANY upper you want on it...long or short.
