Okay so as we all know, the shorter the barrel, the larger the muzzle blast. Well, after realizing that I will probably never use my SBR in a real situation, I decided to make a fun range toy out of it. I decided to use a 7.5" WOA barrel. Also, I wanted see how devastating the concussion was with a compensator. So I bought a PWS FSC556 compensator to try.

I was actually kind of scared to fire the thing, but I did and my first reaction was HOLY F&*@ING BEJEEZUS!

The blast swept across my leftarm and flet like a thousand pin pricks. The concussion was so earthmoving that I was shaking after putting the gun down.

Afterwards, I fired a few more rounds behind the protection of a hastily constructed bunker using the range provided sandbag rests. This stopped the stinging muzzle blast, but I still felt the effects of the teeth rattling concussion.

So there you go, my experimentation with muzzle blasts concludes. I will be switching the PWS out for a regular flash hider. I did it for science and the advancement of ARFCOM-kind.

Oh yeah and obligatory pic of the weapon:

You, my friend, saved me $100 and the aggravation of saving money to find out whether this is a worthwhile comp.

Any chance you could post this on a non-SBR and post some results?  Did it reduce recoil?  How about eliminating flash (considering this is marketed to get rid of flash but is not classified by the ATF as a flash hider...)

I'm really curious.  I have a JTAC-47 brake of theirs that's nifty, and while it's OK for normal plinking, it does reduce muzzle rise some in those rapid fire mag dumps.  Still not sure if I got my $50 of muzzle rise reduction out of it yet though.

Oh, and I'll give you $20 for your comp if you don't want it anymore - I'm sure my buddies could use the experience when they pick my one of my rifles, especially since "a Vortex is too loud and concussive"

Mini - Y on a 7.5" set on top of a M16 lower is a HOOT.... cheeks and fore head flapping, kinda hot, and headsets kinda useless.

Mini - Y on my 22-250 actually pulls the rifle away from shoulder,  no recoil bump felt at all.

I did the same thing with my 7.5" SBR a while back. The Miculek muzzle brake brought the already light recoil to virutally zero, but it felt like a concussion grenade going off 3 feet in front of my face . Scared the bejeezus out of the Fudds who were trying to zero their bolt guns either side of me too . Oh, and I run a Ciener .22 kit in the same rifle, and I found that the brake started to fill up with lead - when I saw this, I switched back to an A2 FH. Pics below:

Yes the PWS works well as a compensator. There was virtually no recoil. I would keep it except the blast scalding my forearm is a little too much. Don't really know how well it suppresses flash as it was bright daylight. You could see two huge jets of smoke coming out the sides.

I don't have any rifles I could mount the PWS on, sorry.

I also had this on a pistol briefly.  There is a lot of concussion.  I was indoors and cleared out both aisle left and right of me.  This was with regular xm193.  Good amount of heat off the left forearm.

I have since, SBR'd and now use a KX3.  Couldn't be happier.

Yes, do you have any more pics of your setup?

My experience is that anything on the muzzle that has holes in it and isn't a suppressor makes the gun louder. I did a weapon demo last week with a bunch of Zastava AKs and the 11" M85 with their funny-looking flash hider (same as M92 but smaller caliber) was much quieter than a similar length AR15 with A2 flash hider.

Well, I always thought the recreational purpose of a shorty is that they are LOUD and FLASHY.

I have a PWS TTO (FSC556 w/o the tines) on my 11.5" POF upper on a Colt M16A2. Yes it's LOUD and FLASHY and yes you'd be wise to wear a long sleeve shirt or suffer powder blast pinpricks on your forearm (but like hammer bite from a 1911, kinda cool). I also wear plugs and ears and glasses.

But the thing's a frickin hoot. The comp keeps the muzzle down on mag dumps and Beta C-mag extended bursts. Fireballs and noise galore. High CDI factor if they don't run away.

I don't know if I have the guts to run it on a 7.5" upper. Methinks that short a barrel, a Noveske Flaming Pig is the way to go (what I have on my POF 11.5 SBR)

This is a great thread!  I'm putting a Surefire FH556-212A on a 10.5" upper this Saturday.  Wondering how that's going to go...

I had that exact set up once. It works fine. THe FH556 is a flash hider, so there won't be any additional noise or concussion (well the short barrel is fairly loud already).

Put one of these babies on your rifle and REALLY blast the walls!

Yeah, I will have the chance to run my 10.5" upper on my dad's Reg. M16 lower, I am looking forward to the blast : )

I've got one of those.  And I've got an 11.5" rifle.  I may just have to try them together.  You know, because I can.

Or if I ever make it out to one of the hometown shoots, you can try it too!

I have a KX3 on each of my SBR's.

One is a 7.5" the other is a 10.5".

Both are loud, but not as bad as my 18" SPR barrel with a Surefire brake.

I have Smith Vortex FH's on my 7.5", 10.5", 11", & 16" and can tell you that the 7.5" is only "a little" louder then the others and ALL of them have zero muzzle flash.  Muzzle Brakes are "always much louder" than flash hiders and don't suppress the flash as well, especially on the 7.5"
