I know, another queston thread from tazaroo........sry.  Along with considering an AC556, I have also considered a FN/FNC and I have a few questions about them as well.  Would it be easier for me to start off with a semi and then get the S&H sear and have it installed or should I just go with one already with the sear?  Are parts readily available for the rifle?  Does Curtis Higgins still install the sear and modify the weapon?  Is it possible to change out the barrels without damage to the receiver?  Do they run well and how are they with 5.56 vs .223 ammunition?  Lastly, can I get one with a 1/7 twist barrel?  Thanks.

I did some research on these and found that parts are imposible to get. I just went ahead and got  the M16. I have heard that AK5 parts kits are available for them though. Go over to the SUBGUNS.com board and ask those guys, I heard someone has a bunch.

The AK5 is a military version that shares the same parts.- Art

Would it be easier for me to start off with a semi and then get the S&H sear and have it installed or should I just go with one already with the sear?
No, it will cost just as much (about $3500 for the rifle, $3500 for the sear, and another $600 for Mr Higgins to install it, not to mention an additional 6-12 months of waiting)

Are parts readily available for the rifle?
No. There is really only 1 parts vendor that keeps many parts in stock. Vulcan Imports

Does Curtis Higgins still install the sear and modify the weapon?
Yes but he charges $600 for the installation and expect to wait 6-12 months as he does conversions in batches after he has gotten a bunch of rifles together.

Is it possible to change out the barrels without damage to the receiver?
It will take alot of work, it's not quick detachable like the AUG

Do they run well and how are they with 5.56 vs .223 ammunition?
Either works fine

Lastly, can I get one with a 1/7 twist barrel?
The new FNCs in Belgium have 1/7 twist barrels but none of the ones imported before the 1989 ban did.

AK5 parts kits are a running joke over on subguns.com

A total of about 20 parts kits were imported back in 2000 or 2001, sold immediately, and no more will be coming.

An insistent troll at subguns started raving about why no one would sell him one. It became an epic joke. Asking about 'em over there will bring you ridicule at best, banning at worst. Every so often, someone will ask what they should do with the thousands of AK5 parts kits holding up the purch on their mobile home, resulting in a new round of hilarity.

I have not seen an AK5 parts kit for sale since 2001.

The biggest problem with the FNC is spare parts as others have mentioned.

The lack of spare parts boils down to two problems.

A.  There is only one parts vendor available. i.e. Vulcan imports who is a one man operations.  Should Chris deceide to get out of the FNC parts game there is no other reliable option.

B. Even with Chris selling most small parts there is absolutely no source for three critical components. Barrels, Bolts, Carriers other than buying another semi host for $3K+.

When I say no source, that is not exactly 100% true as it only took me two years to find a spare complete bolt/carrier/recoil assembly and I have had automated daily searches on gunbroker for years.   Once I did find a spare complete bolt/carrier assembly it cost me $900.

Other than spare parts the FNC is a wonderful gun... but once you wear out or break one of the three components listed above you are really SOL except for purchasing a new host.
