Unless you're a lisc. manufacturer, there is no way you can legally own a FA Glock, or buy the parts to convert one.

I don't think that's  completely true.  I know of at least 3 ways.
1) Mfr (C2)      Make one, buy a pre or post sample, or a transferable.
2) Dealer (C3) Buy a pre or post sample, or a transferable.
3) Find a pre 86 transferable conversion unit & pay $$,$$$.

The Glock 18 is out because it is post 68 and imported, but there are supposedly a few transferable backplates from what I have read. (I haven't confirmed it.)

I've been actively involved with NFA stuff for 14 years now. I've been hearing that rumor for 14 years, but in all that time and in all those contacts, I have not seen a confirmed registered transferable backplate, much less one for sale.

So while it's possible a few are out there, if you decide to find and buy one, plan on searching for a coupla decades.

Remember that the 17 was imported for less than a year before the May 19, 1986 cutoff. The 18 was not designed until after well that date, and the G17 FA drop-in backplate design seen today was invented by John Ramun in 1992.

So for there to be a transferable backplate, someone would have had to find one of those few early imports, then designed and manufactured a new FA backplate from a blank sheet, and registered it ... all in less than a year. And would have had to stay quiet and watch while Glock designed the G18 and Ramun designed his backplate, "reinventing the wheel" that our mystery manufacturer had already invented, made and registered.

Possible? Sure. Probable? Nope.

Tony answered your question perfectly as usual.

However, just to piss you off (because it pissed me off) I want to say my local SOT told me his G18 was like $50 more than a regular new semi G17.   That's just wrong huh.

Also, it doesn't sound like you have shot one.   Find an SOT that has one and shoot it.  It's a real thrill for sure but it's so quick, you are left a little disapointed.  But it's still fun as heck!

Stephen, if I remember correctly, then Jim has a conversion device on his Glock 17, and not a true Glock 18, right?

From a technical point of view (can't help with the legal) the G18 was designed by Glock so the frame and slide could not be interchanged with regular Glock parts - you can't see it in the pics but the G18 frame rails are moulded higher and the slide rails therefore cut higher.

A friend offered me his sample G18 after the novelty had worn off but I bought a backplate instead because the plate can be fitted to any Glock including the G34 (which is heavier, recoils less and has a compensator), .380 G19 (yes I know there are none in the US but recoil is very light) and AA .22 conversion.  If there was a .380 G34 available it would probably be the perfect host for a backplate.

If you're a dealer and want one to play with then get the backplate.

G18 on top, you can see the raised bit on the disconnector that the switch pushes down when the slide comes forward to release the striker.

If you can find one as an FFL/SOT, then a true factory G18 costs much more than a G17 + $50.

OMB express police supply sells them direct from Glock, to agencies only of course but the price is pretty close to a regular Glock .

www.ombguns.com/GlockAgency.html

looks like prices start at 507.00 for fixed sights.

I get the OMB Catalog. I was a little suprised to see the G18 listed right along with "pedestrian" Glocks. I can't imagine how many agencies actually purchase them.

I can see it now....."hey chief, check this out....."

You can get them if you are a Class III FFL/SOT.  They are fun guns, especially with the stock adapter.

Sorry for the crappy pic...
