I apologize in advance if this is not the appropriate topic to be posting under by my knowledge of short barreled shotguns is limited. I want to make a short barreled shotgun, I have read about the process and the forms and what not, my question is, how difficult is it to obtain all the requisite elements, and also I am only 21 years old, I am a Criminal Justice student and want to become a law enforcement officer, but will my age make it difficult to get the approval and get the ATF form? Thanks guys.

Only thinh ittakes is time and money
If you can legally purchase a handgun you can legally (as far as the feds are concerned) purchase any Class III items
Stae laws vary so you should check to see if your state allows SBS's

You should have no more trouble than anyone else, provided it is legal in your state.  All you need is a shotgun, some engraving, some paperwork, and a check for $200.  Once it comes back, you can cut the barrel down.

I would suggest you do a bit of reading on the differences between Individual, Trust and Corporate/LLC registration as a means of ownership before you commit to a course of action.  If you go one way now and change your mind later, the change will cost you another $200.

you might want to find a dealer and BUY one already made. i made one out of my rem 870, and it is a PITA.

i wanted a 14" gun. i had to buy a new mag extension, i needed a barrel. 14" rem barrels are impossible to find so i searched around for someone who could cut mine. i finally just did it myself on a lathe (came out good), but now i have no sights. i need sights added, and will need the barrel re-parked...

find a transferable SBS and buy it.

another thing, i asked around [before i did mine] as to why there were so few SBS's here. the universal response was, "...well, they are kinda useless". after having worked on mine, it has sat in the safe unfired since. i wish i had spent the money on something else.

Vang Comp can do you barrel for you and do it right

Also consider an AOW, probably more of a cool factor and only a $5 transfer tax

here is a little more pr0n for you.  The gun cost $200 as well as the stamp.  I haven't got a bead on it yet, but I have still shot the hell of it.  So I have $495 in this gun after the gun, stamp, mag extension, and engraving.

Ever since Thunderdome, I take the Max Max approach to SBS's:

tony_k, that is a cool SBS.  Is it a 12 ga?  I was thinking of doing something like that for my next SBS, but I didn't know if a 12 would be too much in a gun like that.

I happen to think SBS are a LOT OF FUN to play with.

the Ithaca M37 is an AOW, the rest are SBS.

It's a 20-ga. built on an IGA Gaucha coach gun, by LRM. It's an absolute pussycat to shoot, even one-handed. I didn't have it built myself, I inherited it from a good friend, the late Nick Ward. The SBS is named Bear's Bark, after his pet Rottie, Bear.
I carry it in a Hatcher holster:

More gratuitous photos for those who are interested: LRM used wood from the removed buttstock to form a birdshead grip, then recheckered it. Again, it's a comfortable shooter:

As always with SBS's, it makes a great hand-warmer, but you need to make sure you don't remove any fingers when firing two-handed (which is why I now shoot it offhand):

neat. I like it. I have been thinking about building a SxS myself. I would like to use a hammergun

hello. here is a picture of a couple of mine. they are both 12 guage. the side by side is named viscous because it already tore a guys face and hand open! when i first built it, it had such violent recoil that it would blow both barrels at once! after a few rds, the forearm broke and almost blew off the gun. i fixed the forearm and reinforced it with a steel bottom with a slight ledge to keep your fingers from blowing off! now, it shoots one at a time because its easier to hold onto.  i have a total of 400.00 in it with the tax.

my short shotguns are some of my funnest toys to shoot! i dont know why anyone would juust leave them sit in their safe? maybe they need to shorten the barrels even more?   kirk

if I wanted to buy a SBS all put together is that an option or do I have to make it myself, if so do you still fill out the form 1? If you can purchase one with a short barrel do you still need to pay the 200 usd tax ? sorry if this is common knowledge but I am very unfamiliar with how such things work, I appreciate all the help you guys have been, thanks.

I bought mine already made.  But it was done by the dealer.  I didn't bust out the hack saw or anything.

There's no getting out of the 200 bucks unless you buy an AOW (any other weapon)  Which is designated at the time of manufacture.  An AOW can't have a buttstock.

I have done a little research and have concluded I want the 12.5'' 870 AOW, for this I will need to fill out the form 1 sheet and once I get it I pay the 5 dollar transfer when I buy the gun, or are there any other steps I am missing ? thanks for the help guys

hello. filling out a form 1 is to manufacturer a firearm. this will cost you 200.00. it doesnt matter if you are listing it as an AOW or a SBS, it will still cost you 200.00.  if you are buying the gun already made from a dealer, it will be a form 4 that you have to fill out. you send in the 5.00 the same time as the form.  kirk
