A local police officer just had heart replacement surgery and was left with a large portion of the bill to pay out of his own pocket. He is selling off some of his guns to help with the payment. One of which is a Ruger AC556. I have not yet seen it but I'm going to look at it tomorrow after work. What should I look for? From what I understand, he bought it new and rarely ever shot it. He claims it to be like new. He has several 20, 30, & 40 round magazines and said most of them were Ruger. He said he was asking $4k for it |

Excellent deal. Buy it. Some are folders and some are stainless. Pretty straightforward. It's basically a Mini-14, and I assume you're familiar with their strengths and weaknesses. They're not conversions, no second-guessing quality of post-manufacture work done. Just look to see that condition is as advertised. Throat should look real sharp on a low round count gun. Sam |
Yep, Clyde Armory is offering those. I don't see them listed on the website, but they've posted them on Subguns and Sturmgewehr. |

I have owned an AC556K (blued 13" folder) for about 4 years now, but I don't shoot my AC very often. However, it is a great little gun and with Ruger factory service available which in my un-expert opinion makes it a hidden value in the NFA world. Suppossedly Ruger is beginning to run short on the more exotic parts (folding stocks, 13" barrels) however they still make the 18" barreled version today for Law Enforcement and there while some parts are restricted by Ruger (and hence the gun has to be sent into them for replacement) many parts interchange with the Mini-14 and if needed you can find the restricted parts on the open market via chopped up Post Sample guns. That said, the AC is not an M16,FNC, or HK33/53 in terms of a shootability. The gun is not as ergonomic and it ability to dump alot of rounds downrange without overheating is limited, especially the stainless version. However, for the price (4K in your case or 6K on the open market) they are still a rifle caliber machinegun with factory service, and extremely reliable when utilizing either factory or high quality aftermarket mags (Promag). Good luck with your purchase and unless you already have a M16, FNC, and/or HK33/53 you will be extremely happy with your AC. James Austin, Texas |

Thanks for the info guys. I'll put up some pictures tonight if anyone is interested. I know Ruger mags are the best, is there anything else that works well with them? Promag was mentioned. I would still like to find an M16 in my price range. I sort of have plans to trade this AC556 up to a M16 if I can strike a deal with someone. A local police officer has several Bushmaster M16s that he wants to sale. He feels confident he can transfer them to me. But I don't know how it could be possible. Is it? |
The only way he could transfer one to you is if it is a transferable firearm. If it is a post-sample then no, he cannot transfer one to you. |
I'll quote tony_k (whom I consider an expert on the subject) here -- "Before the May 19, 1986 deadline, Bushmaster was not manufacturing their own lower receivers (they may have manufactured and converted a handful -- four or seven -- right before the deadline; this depends on whom you ask). All, or the vast majority, of Bushmaster-involved conversions were based on semi AR15s that Bushmaster bought from other makers, like Sendra" |
There's your answer -- if you trust that guy that osprey21 quotes. Now, there's a possibility that what the local police officer has for sale are really transferable, pre-1986 receivers that Bushmaster converted, and he just calls 'em Bushys even through the receiver was rollmarked by a different manufacturer. It's definitely worth checking the guns themselves and the paperwork, if the price is right. Just don't give him any $$$ until you're sure of the status. |

CIB I agree, the JAC .22 kit is the SH!T for the AC... but be sure to convert back to .556 every now & then to blow the .22 shiite out of the gas port. I was warned a few years ago, so now besides backing up stuff on my computer's harddrive, flossing my teeth, I've added the AC "blowouts" to my list. $4K... are you kidding me?! That's like finding a Kruggerand in a cat's litter box. Lucky bastich. |
