Ok guys, got an idea running through my head that just won't go away...

...I want to shoot discarding sabot rounds from a black powder smooth-bore cannon.

Why? I dunno...just seems to be an interesting idea for a project.

Make the projectiles out of mild steel rod to keep costs down and not send anyone official into hysterics over "armor piercing" nonsense.

Muzzle loader, because a breech-loader would get expensive. Percussion cap ignition, because waiting for a fuse to burn down is a PITA.

Not really wanting to go huge, was thinking 1.75" bore to shoot  5/8" or 3/4" rod...

Whattaya think, totally ludicrous or doable?

I don't think they would be any better than round balls, or juice cans, unless you shoot them from a rifled bore.

Well, I was thinking of fin-stabilized, as in what the the tankers shoot, only scaled down for black powder...
