Has anyone ever dismantled a high explosive 40mm round? I'm curious about the components. Kind of expensive to buy and then breakdown but I figured if someone would have done it, I could find them here.

You don't want to be taking apart a 40mm HE round... That's a good way to become dead.

There are more than a few pictures of the insides of one floating around the interwebs.

That drawing doesn't even really do it justice.  There is some crazy stuff in there.

Not necessarily on the HE round, but here is a thread on NFA Talk about various explosive rounds with cutaways

There is also a website called ORD Data that is a great resource for finding pics and info about different pieces of ordnance.

I bet I know why you asked, especially in the age of instant answers via google.

... and no, regardless of what you've read, they aren't easily made, especially from simply procured items.

The hard part with making HE rounds is getting the HE and detonator/fuzz.  Seems the ATF and DOT have alot of rules

Perfectly legal to make and detonate your own explosives. You just can't store or transport.

Yes but how to make a 40mm HE round that won't explode if accidentally dropped, or explode when fired and also ensuring it won't become UXO down range...hmmm
