YOUTUBE For some reason i'm not cowering in fear, this thing looks like the 2nd rounds gonna land a football field away from the first target, the tripod isn't nearly heavy enough.

ETA they only show one round impacting at a time, and im sure the lawn mower pull string to cock it will start becoming a high demand low supply item eventually.

I agree that the tripod does look waay too light..but kep in mind that the russians designed it to be a man portable crew serve-unlike the MK19. THe AGS 17 was carried and used to good effect by dismount infantry in Afghanistan. In fact, soldiers developed an attachment to wear so that a person operated as a "tripod" until fire superiority was gained and an actual tripod could be put to use. Some units didn't bother with the tripod at all-they just fired it off the backs of the human "tripod"
(Source for above is The Soviet Afghan War by the Russian General Staff College and a couple other books/accounts of the Soviet Afghan War)

really looks like a vehicle mount or some sandbags on the front would be the best option, but ours is man portable isn't it? im thinking the gun weighs like 70lb and the tripod probably similar, that could be rigged on a pretty empty ruck. then again i haven't had to carry one any distance im sure it wouldn't be pleasant.

Yep, just drop some sand bags on the tripod and you will be fine.

I am a Cav Scout HMMWV VC, and I am the 3 truck in a RSTA MTOE, so my truck is a MK19 truck. The MK19 can be man portable, however it is not practical due to ammo.  One can of 32 rounds weighs 46lbs.  In addition to the tripod, the MK93 mount that goes withthe tripod is around thirty pounds.  The MK19 is best suited for a fixed position or vehicle mount.

I was in an anti armor company and every other truck was a MK19 truck. Yes, it technically is "man portable" but not for any significant distance or with any sort of comfort. For all pratical reasons, it is just like the .50-a vehicle or ground mount crew serve. The MK19 was designed from the start to be a vehicle/hard point mounted weapon. I am not sure if the russian one was, but even if It wasn't, the AGS is lighter and the russian don't care if it is a vehicle weapon-Joe is going to cary it.

The AGS-17's ammo isn't as lethal or versatile as the 40mm range & selection - BUT the AGS-17 isn't as damn finicky with dust.

It was made for horrible conditiona dn to still work.

We got to play with a Soviet "Flame" gun. The grenades are pretty small. The local expert told us the grenades were often armed before they were fired. So he hid behind a wall when we shot it.
It had a pretty low rate of fire. But it shot the 15 rnds we had with out blowing up.
The lawn mower pull cord is pretty chintzy feeling. And the sights pretty much sucked. I'll keep the M-19.
