So they have to have less than 1/4oz of explosive to not be a DD. Ala spotters, raufoss, etc. Where can you find info to make your own LEGAL rounds?
I.e. what's safe? 1/4oz of something like tannerite doesn't sound safe. Aluminum powder would be, so would thermite. I'm building a 20mm cannon, looking for flash and pop, not really trying to blow stuff up. |

That 1/4 oz. includes your lift charge so what you will have is more like a "bird bomb" instead of explosive. I do however, have a nifty explosive recipe if cherry bombs or M80's are legal in your state. My projectiles are made with cast resin pusher wads and 35mm film cans toped off with cast resin nose-cones. If you drill a fuse hole in the pusher wad, glue the film can in place, put the cherry bomb inside the film can with fuse sticking out the bottom of the pusher wad, gorilla glue around the fuse for a good seal, fill the film can with line chalk, glue the nose-cone on, trim and split the fuse to 1/4", add 3/4 tsp. of FFG as a lift charge and seat the projectile: you get a pretty good "explosive practice round". This recipe would all depend on if these type of fireworks are legal in your state.

Yes, the powder in the case used to expell or lift your projo plus the powder to make your projo go boom cannot exceed 1/4 oz. in total. MadDog ETA: Projo = projectile
Incorrect. DESTRUCTIVE DEVICES 26 U.S.C. sec. 5845(f) "The term destructive device means 1) any explosive, incendiary or poison gas A) bomb B) grenade C) rocket having propellant charge of more than four ounces D) missile having an explosive or incendiary charge of more than one-quarter ounce E) mine, or F) similar device 2) any type of weapon by whatever name known which will, or may be readily converted to, expel a projectile by the action of a explosive or other propellant, the barrel or barrels of which have a bore of more than one-half inch in diameter, except a shotgun or shotgun shell which the Secretary or his delegate finds is generally recognized as particularly suitable for sporting purposes; and So, for the my purposes, missle = projo = <1/4oz says nothing about propellent charge. Rocket (which a gun firing fixed cartridge ammo is not) > 4oz (1/4lb) of propellant qualifies as DD. I think is what you are miss-referring to. i.e. It's perfectly legal to own 40mm and larger cannon rounds, which have well in excess of 1/4lb of powder, without each round being a DD as long as the projectile is inert. There are explosives laws regulating cordite/cannon powder in such quantities, but they do not fall under NFA. |
