So I don't know how I didn't notice while I was shooting, but my first outing with my new Obsidian 45 a few days ago (USP 45 and my 9mm AR) and I just noticed I had a serious endcap strike.

Oddly I checked the baffles and don't see any obvious damage, I'll probably take them all out and inspect each one tomorrow more carefully.  This common, an endcap strike without baffle strikes?

Is it really an issue with performance with the gouged out crescent on the endcap?  I guess I could just buy a 9mm endcap but $65 seems a little out there price-wise.

Also, suppose I do get a baffle strike, I just mail the thing to Rugged and they'll fix it?  Or would they just swap me baffles, how does that work?

I would contact Rugged and go from there. They are a great group of people and a stand up company.

Looks like your suppressor became loose while shooting it.  Remember to keep torquing it down while shooting it on a handgun.  Also a 3 lug adapter on your ar 9 will help prevent the need to check it as well. The end cap hole appears to be smaller than the baffles on my Obsidian thus the reason you probably had an end cap strike instead of a baffle strike.

Also, if you do have a baffle strike you will need to send them your suppressor because they can't send you suppressor parts.  The end cap is probably a different story since you can buy those at any suppressor dealer and it is not considered a suppressor part.

If you did that to an endcap with a .45 hole in it, I don't think putting a smaller hole on it will fix the problem. Need to think more about what happened, so that if it occurs again, more serious damage isn't done to your suppressor. Make sure you install it "correctly" by snapping it on the last 1/4 turn. Will see if I can find a video.

Ouch!

I'd make use of the warranty and make sure nothing else was damaged. I certainly would try to figure out what went wrong before taking it out again.

Don't mean to add insult to injury but did you make sure that the can was properly installed, especially on the AR? Either using a dowel rod or purpose made suppressor alignment tool? Did you check that the firearm stabilized the ammo before screwing the can on?

I got in the habit of shooting all ammo, especially subsonic ammo, through the host firearm at close range to see if the ammo keyholed or even had jacket separation. Takes a few minutes to fire 3 or 4 shots at paper, tape the back of the holes, and make sure they striking the target properly/making perfect circles.

I know some don't check but I discovered that Blazer Brass sometimes has jacket separation out of one of my guns. Would hate to have that happen with my can on.

BTW, Blazer doesn't care, stating...when I contacted them...that's part of the reason the ammo is so affordable.

What mounting solution did you use on the AR?

Were you shooting plated or jacketed bullets through either host?

OP, if you were not using a fixed barrel spacer or direct thread mount when shooting the carbine you will experience this issue again.

Make sure that you are not using the spring in the can when shooting on a fixed barrel host.

Got in contact with Rugged and they got back to me like immediately, next business day after the weekend.

Very impressed, no fuss no muss replacing the endcap.  Very glad I chose these guys, this is a huge selling point and impressed with the level of service.

I suspect it was the USP that did it, but I'm not positive.  It was a bit loose after I was done shooting but not like wobbly or anything.

I was using a fixed mount on the AR-9.  But the fixed mount got stuck on the barrel when I removed the suppressor so that was fun, it's a recessed barrel in the handguard so had to pull it off to unscrew the fixed mount.

I decided screw on sucks, so for anything but a pistol I will only use QD, so I put an HKParts 3-lug on my AR9 (with a bit of red permatex).  I probably won't shoot it much on a pistol anyway, just on ar9/mp5/Scorpion.

Teflon pipe thread tape will keep your can from coming loose.   Also works on thread protectors.   Keep it out of the shoulder area, obviously.
