Can I get the signature for suppressor purchase, before buying the suppressor?

You have to provide the cleo with a completed form. .....,.so if your dealer wants to give you a serial # without paying for it....that up to them. Quoted:

So, I could buy a suppressor to have my CLEO say "nope, won't sign it." How do I handle this possibility? |

Is it appropriate to ask, before I buy, if the CLEO will sign it? Quoted:
Is it appropriate to ask, before I buy, if the CLEO will sign it? Absolutely. Call 'em up, stop by, whatever...will obviously depend on the size of the department. But, the list goes way beyond your Sheriff or Police Chief. Quoted:
If you told your location others might be able to tell you if CLEO will sign or not. Here in NC they have to sign within a specific time as long as you pass all the hoops. And yet, some are still refusing to sign. Just don't know if anybody has taken them to court yet (as the "shall sign" statute allows). |

Your local SOT should certainly know if the CLEO is suppressor friendly.
If he doesn't, I'd wonder if he should get my business. But, maybe you're just starting, are looking at the online sellers, and haven't found a local SOT yet. So... As suggested, just call/walk in, and ask if the CLEO will sign the forms. Mine will sign for MG's, but not for Suppressors. Go figure. Lots of trusts in use around here. |

If they say no you can still purchase and set up a trust, or find somebody else qualified to sign....or wait until July when that persons opinion on suppressors will not mean crap. |

Form 4 is the one I need for suppressors, right? |

Quoted:
Form 4 is the one I need for suppressors, right? Form 4 is for transferring an existing NFA item. Form 1 is for making (not manufacturing) & registering a new NFA item. What that item is doesn't decide which form you use. That being said, if you're buying a suppressor, then Form 4 is correct. |

So he is the "silencers are only for assassins and poachers" person, and clearly you cannot be trusted to not be one of those. |

That is up to the CLEO. Some will sign a near blank form, some want it all filled out. Quoted:

Absolutely. Call 'em up, stop by, whatever...will obviously depend on the size of the department. But, the list goes way beyond your Sheriff or Police Chief. And yet, some are still refusing to sign. Just don't know if anybody has taken them to court yet (as the "shall sign" statute allows). Quoted:

I know that here in Forsyth County CLEO used to not sign anything but I don't know now. I guess after July if I haven't got all the NFA items I want I will find out. |

I've never needed to try, but my understanding is Meck is now at least a possibility. |

CLEO sig goes away after July so you won't find out and it won't matter either way - Just Sayin! |

CLEO sig goes away after July so you won't find out and it won't matter either way - Just Sayin! Yeah...we know it. The issue is our AG was so anti-gun he tried to force all CLEO to not sign. Heck, we still have Pistol Purchase Permits which have to be used to buy handguns. NC passed "shall sign" legislation last year, and it'll end up being in effect for less than 12 months by the time it won't matter any more. So, lots of people are just wanting to force the antis into signing a form while they can. The legislation basically says they have to sign within 15 days unless there's a legal reason the person shouldn't own the firearm, and if they refuse they're taken to court where they're forced to sign and pay court costs. In some areas they're still passing the buck with the COP and Sheriff each pointing to the other saying they're the CLEO. |

Nothing like pissing away tax money on principle - seems like running them out of office might be a better use of their time and money |
