I have read on here a dirty suppressor is a quiet suppressor. True or not? Does a rifle can or pistol can (excluding 22) really need cleaning if shooting quality ammo?

Speaking from experience with my .22 cans I have found they are quieter when dirty. I have not and I will not run them to the point of diminishing return to find out how many rounds it takes before the build up affects performance. I can tell a distinct difference in the sounds after I clean them and it usually takes about 50 rounds before they settle down.

It takes much longer for build up to form in centerfire cans due the the heat and high pressure continually loosening things up. A lot of guys will fill some type of tube or PVC with cleaning solution and soak their cans between range sessions. If you choose to soak the can make sure you drain it and use compressed air to blow out as much cleaning solution as possible before firing.
