How are these suppressors? Looking to buy a relatively inexpensive can and I can't seem to find many reviews on it.

Thanks,

I'd like to say I bought mine because it was cheap, but I really bought it because it was one of the shorter 5.56 cans that did a great job of lowering the Db level of the 5.56 round. It does that well and  I'm completely happy with it.

there is a great review of it on line from Small Arms Review.

I saw it in the deals thread and bought one because of the price as well.  It is short and not too heavy so it should work out great.  Here is the aforementioned review:  http://www.smallarmsreview.com/display.article.cfm?idarticles=242

I bought one from Phoenix Distributors on gun broker b/c of the price. I was previously set on a griffin spartan 3 as a direct thread but the sub $300 price convinced me

Thanks guys, I clicked on that review earlier but it wouldn't load for some reason, but I got it to work just now. So I'm new to suppressor and don't know too terribly much about them. Does the welded construction mean that the TREK is not user serviceable? I'd really like to be able to take my can apart to keep it clean.

Love mine.  so light and compact.  Has a really nice deep sound to it too.

Yes, it's a sealed can.  There is no need to service a centerfire rifle can.  Just keep the threads clean.

That's good to know. So, the Gemtech site isn't very helpful about the mounts. If I order a TREK will it come with a mount or will just be a direct mount to the barrel itself? Forgive me if this doesn't make sense
2/18/2015 12:21:26 AM EDT
[#8]
Trek is direct thread.  The Mount is the threads on the end of your barrel.

Awesome! One last question, what kind of transfer fees do dealers usually charge for class3 things?
2/18/2015 1:06:26 AM EDT
[#10]
$50-$100 is not uncommon.
2/18/2015 1:15:27 AM EDT
[#11]
Thanks again for the help guys!

Last question (for real this time). After I purchase the suppressor, it is transferred from the dealer I purchased it from to the dealer I chose to pick it up at which usually takes about 3-6 weeks or so from what I've read. So, when do I fill out my form 4?
2/18/2015 1:29:52 AM EDT
[#12]
Out of state:
Purchase dealer-form3->transfer dealer-form4-> you.
In state:
Purchase dealer-form4-> you.

[#13]
So I just got off the phone with the closest class3 dealer to me and he said that e-filing for form 4s had been down for awhile and won't be back for another 12-18months. Is this true? Not that it's a deal breaker, but it's certainly a pain in the ass.

yes it is true and he's speculating out his ass on when it will be back online. Nobody knows.

It's not a big deal - 100 day paper f4s.

Yes efile for F4 is down.  It is projected to be back online this year, but who knows.  Just paper file like the rest of us.  Paper F4 wait times are trending down anyways.

Thanks. The only thing that's holding me back now is the $150 transfer fee from these guys. I hate that a small town shop that's pretty much the only gun store (let alone class3 dealer) within 50miles of me likes to jack up the prices. Does anyone know of any reputable class3 dealers in the western north carolina area? I'd be willing to drive about 100miles or so to pick up my suppressor. Thankfully I get 40mpg

Tarheel State Firearms is in Matthews, NC.  Not sure how far that is from you.  http://www.tarheelstatefirearms.com/

If you can afford it i highly recommend upgrading to the Trek-T, its the lightest and shortest full size suppressor out there right now.

To answer your previous question no it doesnt have a mount, it screw right onto the threads like a flash suppressor, which is awesome because you take a 2.3 oz flash hider off and put a 10.3 oz suppressor back on meaning you only added about 8 oz to your gun, easily half or even a third of what so stainless steel quick detach suppressors will add to your rifle.

silencershop.com is a good place to buy from they have pretty good deals. You just buy from them, they ship it to a local class 3 dealer and they you fill out the for 4 at your local dealer, should cost around $40+/-

if you only plan to use the suppressor on one rifle/upper receiver i highly recommend the Trek-T, i like mine a lot. Downside is if you want to move it to other rifles in a pain to get off, the reason or this is you have to use thread locker (ie rocksett or loctite) to keep it from unscrewing while fired which makes it difficult to remove it on a regular basis, and when you do get it off you have to clean the threads before reattaching.

That's about a $600 upgrade. It's just not worth it to me.

But I didn't forget to mention that the place I was going to buy my TREK from had them listed for $339 and I thought that was a steal, so I'm glad that someone pointed me into the deals thread and I was able to save an extra $45! Again, thanks for all the help.

Was the $339 Trek a local FFL? If it was I'd pay the extra $45 to avoid the Form3 wait.. I was going to pick up the Trek deal since the seller is 1.5hrs from me but unfortunately they do not sell directly to the public.. Can+tax+form3 wait+transfer fee makes it no longer a deal imo..

considering one, but no mount kind of turns me off. for the people who have one, do you always keep it on the rifle or remove it. If you remove it and put it back on do you ever have problems with threads being gunked up and the suppressor not shouldering?

1. My Trek-T lives on a SBR. It was purchased with the intent of making a short and light carbine that won't blow my ears out, and works fine for that purpose. This is a "set it and forget it" setup, I don't shoot it unsuppressed.

2. I remove the suppressor every few hundred rounds to clean the bore and have never had an issue. I use blue Loctite to keep it from loosening and just clean the threads with a toothbrush to get most of the gunk off. The "gunk" is actually good though, it's the polymers left over from heated Loctite and it creates friction that keeps the can from backing off. I used nail polish to paint a witness mark on the barrel onto the suppressor to index it and show whether it is backing off, and it re-threads perfectly to match the witness marks each time.

Now is it okay to leave it on a rifle/handgun, etc. all the time? I thought that wasn't a good idea as it can cause moisture problems in barrel leading to rusting out of barrel. At least that is what I thought I read somewhere?

I've read that too, but I've never actually seen it happen. Nor does the supposed mechanism by which it happens even make sense from a scientific standpoint, at least not to me.

That said, if you're concerned, just store it muzzle-down. Only issue with that is oil flowing down from the action into the barrel.

Where would the moisture cold from? Maybe if you dunked it and put it right in the gun safe but if you clean your rifle and give it a coat of oil when you're done I don't think you will see any rust. Never had any issues with mine and it stays on there 24/7

Does anyone know if these can be used with the SCAR 16 10" barrels?

Gemtech's website says "approved for use with 10.3" barrels and I am not sure if the SCAR barrel is 10.5" or 10.0" or if 0.3" would even be an issue. SCAR would be ran in semi-auto only.

Thanks!

So it's been 3 days since I bought the Trek from Phoenix Distributors, and their auction said they'd be in contact for payment with 48hrs and if they weren't, to contact them. I emailed them yesterday after the 48hrs mark and haven't heard anything back from them. I have payment ready. Is this normal? I figure with over 26k positive feedback on gunbroker I shouldn't be worried, but like I said, it's my first nfa item and I want to make sure everything goes smoothey.

I emailed for instructions to pay, then just decided to call.  They sent me an email later on in the afternoon.  So, yes, just call them.

I also requested the serial number of "my" can and they quickly got it for me.
