They finally got the HTA Kestrel QD system released, and it's based off the YHM QD.

Which YHM mount is preferred for general usage, the flash hider or brake? How well does their mount work with regular YHM cans?

I opted for FH mounts for my builds. I have an LT that should be approved any day now, and also (similar to your situation) recently bought a Saker with a YHM MAAD mount. I talked to both YHM and Silencerco and was told that due to the quality of materials used, a brake wouldn't make much difference in wear when shooting suppressed. (I specifically asked about 8" 300BLK, 10.5" 5.56 and 12" 6.8).

Both told me to choose what I wanted and liked best. The difference will be the look and how it shoots unsuppressed. Most people opt for the brake for the blast baffle protection, and aren't fans of shooting them unsuppressed with the brake. I personally like the look of the YHM FH mounts, so I have 8 of them.

I have brakes in 5.56 and 7.62. I really don't love the way they look, but as far as function of locking a can up they work very well.

I opted for the Flash hiders, but before I mounted them, I thought better of it.  The HTA cans have Stainless Baffles, correct?  I think even the blast baffle is stainelss.  A brake will reduce the wear on the baffles significantly.  The Flash Hider is nice if you're going to shoot enough in low light or darkness without the can on.  If you plan on shooting mostly at day with GOOD hearing protection, the brakes are fine.  They are also pretty effective.  So, the brakes win hands down most of the time.  I have a couple of Flash Hiders I'm going to list on EE after my YHM can gets paroled.
