I built an AR-style pistol and currently have it set up for .22LR. I also have a fake suppressor...no guts, just a hollow aluminum tube. For looks only I've mounted the fake suppressor on the pistol. Am I in danger of coming too close to the line as to what is illegal?

Thanks.

There is a reason they are called fake, lots of firearms are sold with a fake suppressor as part of the package,

GSG's had a recall on their fake suppressors back in the day.

IIRC the original can was open and hollow in the middle, with the barrel going all the way through the can.
But, if you were to thread it onto something with out the barrel going all the way through the fake can it would have an expansion chamber and be considered an NFA item.

The new cans that were issued are sleeved in the middle, so it would be an extension of the barrel if installed onto something shorter.

So, it would depend on how the hollow tube is constructed.

Edited to add: Least that's how I interpreted the whole thing.

Fake cans are for strippers.

And yes, ATF has gotten their panties in a wad over some of them.

I've never understood fake suppressors, semi auto MAC-10s and non alcoholic beer.

It's strictly for looks. To see how a project will appear in final form. In this case it's also until I can get a Noveske KX3 on the barrel. As I envision someday of getting not only a suppressor and or an SBR it's good to see what ideas turn into on the cheap, i.e - using a fake suppressor.

In this case indeed, the can is hollow, similar to an expansion chamber, and that's a reason I asked the original question.

Agreed...and most of the fake cans I have seen aren't even similar dimensionally to the real can...

I have a .22 lr upper for one of my sbrs. The rail is longer than the barrel. When my .22 can is on my pistol, I use a fake suppressor on the .22 upper to keep the inside of the rail from getting all nasty from the .22 ammo. I'll eventually have two .22 cans, but the fake one does serve a useful purpose for now. YMMV.

Im specifically calling out the people that get fake suppressors for no other reason than to achieve a look.  IMO, that is goofy as hell.

Go with the floral print, it hides stains better.

I bought one for my 7 year old because he thought it looked "cool."  Is it goofy to let a kid be a kid?

Kids......really?  That all you got?  Are you running a fake suppressor to look cool too?  Be honest.

HIS rifle has one, mine doesn't have one.  Real suppressors aren't legal in VT for some stupid reason.
