How good is the original SD by today's standards?  Have they changed the suppressor since its introduction?  I have wondered this since i first shot one.  Granted that was indoors and with supersonic ammo.

I have tested the original MP5SD, the Vector version and the RDTS.  The RDTS beat everything, by a mile.  Super quality too.

Mine is a S&H conversion with Fleming registered sear.  It runs like butter and is still the gold standard today for an intergrally suppressed subgun IMO.  I fell in love after one magazine.  No worries about picking up the wrong ammo as it always bleeds the round down to subsonic and is quieter than all of my other suppressed guns except the .22 LR Outback IId.  Very smooth and very well done by Curtis Higgins.

Have you heard/tested the Coharie Arms MP5SD clone?  How does it compare?

I've heard good things about the RCM can.  I should find out in the next 2-4 months

I was more wondering about the design and effectiveness of the original

The basic concept is a sound one (no pun intended), with companies still using the same design principles to this date (ported barrels with shroud style suppression). One thing to know about the SD is that the ports in the barrel vent off enough of the propellant gases to slow down the 115gr supersonic round to subsonic speeds. The end result of a 115gr pill flying at subsonic speeds is akin to .380 ballistics, which is fine and dandy when you have select fire capability. In semi-auto, meh. I won't be selling/trading off my MP5 SBR & Suppressor combo to switch over to the SD setup, not unless a "Go" switch is involved.

Cleaning a suppressed HK action is a filthy ass affair. I'll never complain about cleaning an AR15 EVER AGAIN! Supposedly cleaning an SD model is an even bigger pain in the ass. I'm glad to say I have no experience cleaning one

Out of curiosity, how much does an MPDSD from RDTS cost?

So you send in a HK94 or clone and he builds the can and does the rest of the conversion? Any idea what the conversion runs aprox?

The original ones are suuuuper quiet.
They are quiet even by today's standards.
I have a couple HK MP5SD silencers that are left over from some guns I cut up. Great design.

Not very good by today's standards. Keep in mind MP5SD is a mid 1970s gun. It was  good at the time. HK (or B&T) redesigned it with a new baffle stack, maybe be more than once, but I have only seen two cutaways.
I have a brand-new one in-bound, be interesting to see how it compares to my KAC SD, and what baffle stack it has.

Here is one:

I haven't compared it to other similar types but the factory SD I've shot was very quiet. It doesn't like our crap frangible ammo very much. The silencer portion is quite heavy when removed for cleaning. The tube does not come off the baffles like the picture above, it come off in one piece like a normal sealed can. I would guess it is about 15-20 years old so I don't know if it is current style/old style or what.
