i should receive a threaded .22 upper today and am in hopes i can find a way to use a suppressor for it as well as a larger caliber via an adapter.
do they make such an animal? what caliber could/would you recommend i go up to: 9, maybe 40?

A take apart 9mm can would work if you get it with the 1/2x28 threads like your 22 barrel will have.

Just make sure you that the can is serviceable.  Shooting .22 gets alot of lead and gunk in cans.

thanks guys! i have my upper now and in talking w/receiving ffl he named a couple of dealer in the area who can do the whole thing for me.
apparently it's the norm for the selling dealer to complete your trust for you. good thing because i asked ny guardianship atty if he could do an nfa trust for me and he asked what was that?
any advice on brands, although if i stayed off the ee i'd have my $$$ quicker!

Yeah, you can put about any can you want on one.  For adapters, I've been very happy with Mark's work from TROS
