So I'm just throwing it out here. I'm wanting to possibly get a draco pistol, and instead of SBRing it since that is not legal in WA, and I don't want to have a retarded barrel extension on it, can I attach a supressor to it permanently with silver solder like a flash hider? I want to add a buttstock to it and make better, quieter, house gun AK. I know the 922r laws.
Does anyone know how to see if the barrel is concentric with the threads? or a business who would? Would this be removable down the road or is it on for good? (if WA ever changes SBR laws) I'm not worried about suppressor modularity so having a dedicated can is no biggie. I know the limitations of suppressing an ak so please don't fuss about that. This is just informational for a possibility down the road. Thanks guys |
| Potentially difficult based on the design of the AK. Depending on how close it is to the front sight block (on a Drako, it's going to be pretty close if not butted right up to it) it could prove challenging. As for heat treatment, no. Any quality made suppressor from a reputable manufacturer will be fine. Realize that they're designed to withstand massive amounts of heat and pressure associated with firing the firearm. Silencers generally aren't developed with the civilian market in mind, rifle cans particularly. They're designed to be competitive in the military market and to be able to withstand automatic fire and clandestine environments. |
| Was planning on silver soldering it so in the case I change my mind, I can pull it off with some elbow grease, then attach a barrel extension on. As for threads I'm pretty sure there are thread adapters to bring it to 5/8x24. Would a double silver solder hold up? I'm currently getting geared up to cast my own 7.62x39 and have been researching subsonic loads that work the action. Seems there are a few. And yes, I know the drawbacks to suppressing an AK, but I really think it is no worse than an AR when it comes down to the nit and gristle. |

I don't think you do know how loud a AK suppressed is but you will find out, much louder to the ear than a AR by far.
And if you can remove it with elbow grease then its in violation, if it can be removed without tools its in violation, if it can be removed without the use of a grinder or torch then its in violation. All of your work will most likely get you a destroyed can as most of the factory threads on those guns are not concentric to the bore. |

Better yet, would attaching one of the many barrel extensions and threading it to 5/8x24 be any better? Would one be able to acquire the concentric threads required for suppressor use?
Y'all shouldn't worry about how loud an AK is. It doesn't matter to me, I'll be using subsonic low gas loads, and the action of an AR is almost as loud if not as loud. The gasses will have escaped through the ports in the gas tube before it came out the massive gap at the rear sight base anyway. |
| There are a couple companies that make shrouds for firearms that people want not to be SBRs - you could gin something like that up. The shroud gets you to 16.1", and the can threads on and off inside as usual, with a little sticking out the end to make it look less goofy |
Beyer makes them for 10/22. I think ADCO was looking in to making them for AR15s recently. I haven't found one for AK pattern rifles; this is probably more a function of, as others said, the fact they don't suppress well. |
| Since I doubt there are any shrouds for an AK for reasons stated. How are the red jacket suppressors for quality. Not looking at the show as a determining factor, what is that actual quality of their suppressors if anyone reading this knows. I should post this in another thread huh? |
