I am concidering a silencer for my rifle. However it seems like everyone has the "best". So a little help would be appreciated. Are all silencers created equal or are some better than others. This will be going on a ar. Any help would be appreciated.

What is the caliber of your AR?

How much suppression do you want?

Will it also be used on different rifles that might be a larger caliber?

Length of the barrel?

Will it potentially be run on a SBR someday?

Do you want direct threading or QD capability?

How much are you wanting to spend or not spend?

My rifle is a .223 and I would like to have enough suppression to not have to wear hearing protection(if that is possible).  My barrel is 16" long and yes I hope to use it on a SBR in the future but I don't know how far in the future that will be. It will most likely be used mostly on .223 or .22. I would rather have direct threading but am open to either one. As far as price goes if possible I would like to stay around $500, if that would be possible.

My advice would to still use ear pro with a suppressor on a 5.56.  It is still fairly loud but way quiter then without it.  If you run .22lr through it then I would advice a take apart can.  But I can't think of any for a 5.56 off the top of my head.  Someone with more knowledge will eventually chime in.

If you are looking for a thread-on can, then I would advise looking at one of the Ops-Inc cans.  They are some of the quietest, GREAT customer service, and their mounting system is pretty slick too.  They are over $500 though, but it will be tough to find a quality can for under $500.

With all that in mind, I would get an AAC Ranger II and just not shoot .22 through it.
