Hey guys,

I'm getting ready to thread my Rem 700 SPS Tac to take my YHM 5.56 Phantom and was wondering if anybody has run a .223 suppressed bolt gun and what, if any subsonic .223 ammo they run through their setup. How loud is suppressed subsonic .223 out of a bolt gun. Though there is a significant sound reduction between suppressed and unsuppressed on my 10.5 inch AR-15 upper, it just isn't as quiet as I was hoping it was going to be.

Any recommendations?

Thanks

waste of time.

Went through much playing around working up a subsonic load, and gave up.

Hows the sound reduction using regular ammo? I'm using Speer 64 grain almost exclusively?

I used 3.3 grains of titegroup with a 55 grain bullet.  Its very quiet.  But you might as well be shooting a .22lr.  It's has a cool factor that wears off after the first couple shots.

this

40 grains at 1050fps from 22lr

bolt gun, semiauto, pistol, etc.

Agreed, you can also get the aguila sniper sub sonic 22lr. It has a 60gr bullet so you get terminal ballistics that are similar to a subsonic .223 but at a fraction of the price

I use 4.0 grains of Trail Boss with Hornady 55gr FMJ bullet with an COAL of 2.200 in a couple of my ARs.  It is quieter than my suppressed .22LR pistol.

There is this, it uses a 100gr. bullet and its not cheap.http://extremeshockammo.3dcartstores.com/223-100-gr-ASP-C-Advanced-Subsonic-Product-Commercial-20-rds_p_1043.html

I used the heaviest I could get locally (usally 75 to 80 grains) and trailboss. Sounded like subsonic .22. accuracy was for shit. Did not cycle.

Can't help you with a strictly bolt-gun application, but...

4.8 gr of Trailboss w/ 60gr V-Max out of an AR.  Pretty quiet and accuracy was acceptable at 50 yards.  It's obviously not a long range load and not all that powerful at slightly under 1000fps.

The price you pay for the lack of sound...

I loaded up some subs with 4.0 of Trail Boss and a 55gr FMJ.  In my 18" AR they were pretty quiet.  Not as quiet as suppressed .22LR subs, but quieter than unsuppressed .22LR sub ammo.  Rifle didn't even try to cycle, so I"m guessing it's about as quiet as a bolt gun would have been.  I did try a couple of rounds in my 13" barreled AC556 in the back yard and the wife came outside and said she heard it inside, so maybe the shorter barrel is actually getting higher velocity and definately more muzzle blast.  It's fun for it's quietness but having to hand cycle an AR gets old really quick!  Here's a vid so you can kind of hear the difference....

Super and Subsonic .223 through a .30 cal can

Cool video Doug!!!

I did notice when i shot my subsonic loads in my 10.5" SBR the chronograph was showing a higher velocity than my 16" rifle.

Thanks!  I remeber reading somewhere long ago that about the perfect barrel length for a .22lr was around 13-14".  By that time all the powder's burnt, gasses expanded and the bullet's friction is actually slowing it down.  I'm guessing it's even worse with a copper jacked bullet versus a soft lead with a thin copper coating.
