I am looking to get a Ruger MK III 22/45.

I am wondering if I should get the 4" bbl or the 5.5" bbl.

What are the pros and cons for each?

Is one quieter than another?

I am looking at these scilencers:

SWR Warlock: $395

scilencerco Sparrow : $390

AAC Pilot 2 : $350

Gemtec Outback II : $300

TAC 65 : $230

Any of these I should shy away from?

Can I get some pros or NO! s with any of these?

Get the 4".  It will keep Federal bulk pack subsonic.  The 5.5" barrel will not.

Ok, very convincing reason. I buy ALOT of federal bulks for my 10/22.

4" - 4.5"  for cans and HV.

Wish they offered a non MKIII in threaded but will gladly pay the extra  $100.

Untrue, I have a threaded 5.5" and have never had ANY HV 22LR go supersonic out of my MKIII.

what suppressor are you using?

Many factors come into play like the temp outside, elevation and ammo all make a difference if a 5.5"
barrel keeps hi vel ammo subsonic.
Ammo that is subsonic in the summer can go super in the winter, I bet your 5.5 barrel in my state would
be supersonic with most hi vel ammo.

I think you way over estimate the quality of Ohio weather!

I shot it in the winter when it was in the low thirties here and didn't have any issues. The one thing you may have me on is elevation though, we average about 850ft ASL.

I know several guys with 5.5" guns and nobody has ever had any issues, even a few 6" MkII's too.

Seeing as how the OP is in TX I don't think temp or elevation is going to be an issue for him.

Any advice on the Suppressor then? I'm thinking if it's going to be the same price i'm going to just get the 4" bbl

GET THE SPARROW. also the new factory threaded 22/45 is a sweet little piece

My Mk III 22/45 was cut to 4.5" and bulk pack stays subsonic.  I have the Outback II and I am very happy with it.  I have shot it against many other popular .22 suppressors and the differenced were so slight, that it really isn't worth arguing about.  With that said, I would get the new SS Sparrow.

Where are you located in TX?  Go with the factory threaded 22/45 and the SS Sparrow.  I have that setup and it is pretty sweet.

look at it this way, a 4.5 inch will almost certainly keep it subsonic, a 5 inch almost certainly won't, but for some people it does. Take that for what it's worth

The sparrow is awesome, but if you can't find one in stock somewhere, you'll have to wait at least 6 months just go get the serial number. I personally would go with an element right now.

if you're looking for a ruger factory threaded uppper for sale, pm me, I have one for sale.

What on Earth are you basing this statement on?  I would love to see the chrono testing and ammo evaluations you are basing this statement on.

experience, the ones I have been around have not, it's pretty easy to tell, no need for a chronograph.  it cannot be stated as fact because there are people who have had the rounds stay subsonic.  It is simply much more likely that the shorter barrel will keep the rounds subsonic.

I'm not going to fight you over this because internet fights are stupid and just makes us both look like dumb fucks.  I just pay attention to the fact that a 4.5 is much more likely to keep it subsonic than a 5.5.  That being said, I haven't seen 5.5 barrels consitently keep rounds subsonic ever.  OP, take it for what it's worth.

I have a MK2 22/45, 5.5" that I had threaded and not cut down.  I have loaded mags with a random mix of CCI subsonic and Federal bulk pack and I can hear the difference in the rounds.  Wish I would have had it cut to 4" but it is too late for that now and I like the aesthetics of the longer barrel.  Suppressor is the AL version of the Sparrow.  Federal in my Sig Mosquito is always sub-sonic.

Most of the time I dont know what I'm talking about so dont take my advice when I say a 5.5" barrel will
not keep most hi vel ammo subsonic and a 4.5 will.
I only make, modify and test barrels with many brands of ammo 5 days a week
.

.

.
Go with the 4 - 4.5" and you will be glad you did

why don't you just get the factory threaded barrel gun?
http://www.ruger.com/products/2245ThreadedBarrel/models.html

They are about $350 retail, and you can get them either with iron sights or with the top and bottom pic rails.  No gunsmithing.  They have a nice thread protector on a bull barrel with 1/2x28 threads.  It is quite clear that Ruger built this gun for silencer owners and they probably did their homework as to what length would keep the rounds subsonic.

I will have to concur with this statement...

My MKIII h the wood panels like the one shown, I wish I had not paid the extra money for them. It would be much nicer to just be able to throw the thing in a bucket of solvent to clean it and not have to take the grips off every time because with a can on there they get filthy fast.

I agree with you that I have no interest in a pissing contest, I don't need to look dumber than I am.

All I am saying is that I constantly hear people say it won't work and mine has never gone supersonic with a 5.5" bbl. This is a classic case of YMMV.

With that said I am regularly shooting Stingers or Velocitors in below freezing conditions either so take that for what it is worth too.

One caveat to buying the factory threaded Ruger and the Sparrow the threads on the Ruger will not engage the o-ring in the Sparrow. Silencerco has a special thead set up to engage the o-ring.  The normal 1/2-28 x .400 WILL work but in my case I didn't plan on laying that kind of $ out again for another .22 can any time soon, so I went with the oWring spec.
