OK, I've decided to buy a can this year with my wife's blessing believe it or not. I primarly want it for hunting since more and more houses seem to be poping up out in the sticks. Most of my rifle hunting is done with a .308 bolt gun and a .223 AR, I've considered buying the YHM 7.62 and using it for both.
But, I've also just considered just getting the 5.56 phantom and floating it around to all my AR's. 308's are supposed to be loud, right? Old Marine |

Is hunting with a suppressor legal in TN? Not in CT. From what I've heard, the difference in suppression of 5.56 through a 30cal can is negligable compared to a 5.56 can. The extra weight would be the down side and double-duty as a 308 can is the upside. Extra weight vs. utility Semper Fidelis, Old Marine. |

The nice lady on the phone at TWRA said that it is perfectly legal to take game with a weapon using a silencer/suppressor provided that silencer/suppressor was legally owned.
I just think it would be neighborly to not wake folks up when I take out Bambi or Wiley. As a side question would a 22RF suppressor work with a 22MAG? S/F |

I have both the YHM 556 and 762 cans. Mine are the quick-detach, so the 762 can gets used on 556 rifles sometimes. I can see from firsthand experience that shooting 556/.223 through a 762/308 can sounds just fine. From the shooter's perspective, there is a negligible difference between that and shooting a 556 can on a 556 rifle. I wouldn't worry about the sound reduction issue. Like was stated above, its a matter of whether you're willing to accept the increased size and weight for the ability to use the 308 can on 556 rifles. That is something only you can really answer.
There are a few .22 rimfire cans that are rated for 22mag use. Off the top of my head they are the Sparrow, Checkmate, and there's a few others. If you're gonna use it on a 22mag, BE SURE it's rated for that before you buy it. On another note, this morning I took two shots (full power ammo, not subsonics) off my back porch with a .308 bolt gun using my YHM 762 and my wife, who was upstairs dressing the girls twenty feet away, didn't even hear the shots. eta: Hunting with a can is real fun! It's legal in Oregon and very fun to do. |
