I'm in the market for a suppressor.  I'm contemplating but a .308 suppressor since I have a couple .308 rifles and a couple 5.56 rifles I want to suppress and I would like to use the same can for all of them.  I've seen it talked about but I can't find any specific information about using a .308 can to suppress a 5.56.  What do I need to know about this, is it a smart thing to do, or am I better off buy a 5.56/223 can and a .308 can?

I'm in the same boat man.  From everything I've researched, a 7.62 can will suppress a 5.56 just fine but will "sound different".  So, my plan is to by the 7.62 can first and use it on everything, then when funds are available, get the 5.56 one.

Not a problem. SIG556 with an AAC 762-SD and 51T Blackout mount

It will work fine, the only thing you're really sacrificing is that the can will be larger than it needs to be.

As mentioned, teh can will be larger, however, since the bore size is bigger, the volume helps with suppression.

I've only fired two YHM cans in both sizes side by side, volume was teh same, except teh 556 can had a lower tone, than the 308.  Think of it, like hitting a drum, and then a cymbal, at the same volume, but they ahve different tone, or pitch.

This is what I am looking at doing.  I'd rather start with my first can that works on everything, then get 5.56 can that is smaller and lighter as funds allow.

My friend has a YHM QD 762 on his Rem 700, his 5.56/.22conv SBR, and says it works very well on all 3 calibers.  That's the route I'm taking as well getting QD mounts on my 6.5 Grendel, both of my 7.62x39s, and my 6.8 upper.  Perhaps next year I'll build a 5.56/22 upper as well for my GF to shoot, and having a can on that too will just be fun.

I run an SAS 30 cal can.  It works just fine on 223 .. though it is bigger and heavier than it needs to be.

For a 308 can, its the best deal on the market, IMHO.  Though if you are looking at this can buy it HERE.  Randy at MHSA has a good working relationship with SAS and stocks his cans regularly.  Tim @ SAS can be hard to get ahold of from time to time.

Just remember NOT to shoot .22LR in any sealed unit.
