I would love to run a sound suppressor on my AR. 1) They look bad ass 2) they sound bad ass 3) refer to 1 & 2 again The question I have though is that if I drop $500.00 - $600.00 on the suppressor, pay for all the licenses and get it on my rifle, how long do they last? Do they loose their ability to suppress over time, depending on the number of rounds you send through it? I'm hoping to take a CQB course and we will expend about 2500 rounds in a single weekend, will the suppressor still work as it did when I first got it after that? I don't want to have to replace it every 5000 rounds or anything. |

Lots of info here if you are willing to read up. Most suppressors are built fairly hardily, but some do have more limitations than others. For your price point I assume you are looking at a short bodied or a YHM. If you take care of them they can last beyond your usage. If you abuse it it will eventually fail. By abuse I mean, multiple mag dumps in the rain or dunking to cool or filling it with wolf powder and never cleaning it.
Properly cared for you will probably never notice an audible difference in its lifetime. Now, it is not a license you get, it is a tax you pay, once per item and it is then registered to you, Check the stickies above this. Also, if you are putting this on an SBR, you should be fairly NFA saavy and not need this post. If you are putting this on a carbine (unless it is an OPS M4S) you are missing the point of CQB. Most mfgs. don't warranty their goods on barrels less than 10-11" so keep that in mind. Wes |

You may want to take into consideration that 10.5" and under barrels are considerably harder on suppressors.
Putting 2500 rounds through a can in one weekend using a 10.5" is likely to cause some noticeable erosion of the blast baffle. Even with that being said, the can would still have a lot of life left in it as long as it's a good can from the start. |

Abuse is defined IMO as excessive heating, dumping water in it and damaging the threads. |

Excellent, all very good points. I'm glad I posted my question here. I have a 16" barrel and it didn't even dawn on me that I'm adding 8" to my barrel... FAR too long for CQB. Most of the images I'm looking at for this class are on very short barrels. Again, thank you for all your feedback. I think with all that was said I need to put more thought into it. Throwing money at my rifle isn't always going to work out =D |

The Ops Inc site says the expected service life is 30,000 rds. Any centerfire rifle suppressor can last upwards of 100,000 rounds or can be destroyed in less than 500 rounds. It is all a matter of how the user treats his tools. Same goes for a car: it can last 1/4 million miles or can be destroyed in a couple of thousand. Reasonable care and lack of abuse are the secrets. |

for a 2,500 round course with a supressor, you might also want to consider a 3m face mask, goggles, and be sure to use lots of lube and try to wipe the carrier and bolt every 500 rounds or so. Oh yea, remove the suppressor every 200 rounds or you might copper weld the thing onto your flash hider. |

Yup, the gas in your eyes will get old; consider a Gasbuster C/H and the "diy caulk seal job" 2. Stuff, and I mean EVERYTHING gets WAY dirtier WAY faster with a can on) example: http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2009/06/09/suppressed-rifles-get-very-dirty/ 3. My YHM phantom 556 QD just got "welded" onto my 10.5" LMT upper a couple weekends ago after less than 100rds. For the QD cans just pretreat the threads with Breakfree. I'm not sure what to do about the thread-on cans; maybe anti-seize?) |
