Now that Gemtax has been annouced and neither of the cans I wanted were listed (did not think a .22 would be) its time to buy. I was going to make an Outback2 my 22lr can until I came upon the Alpine. Price on the Outback for me is $320 and the Alpine is $425. Down side is the Alpine is longer by an inch and just a little heavier.

QUESTION––is being able to take the can apart to clean it worth the extra $100 plus length/weight?

No full auto and this is jsut a toy for me.

22LR is very dirty, I've filled up 2 outback II's and had them both retrofitted to be user serviceable.  It is worth the extra money.

We make a cleanable .22lr silencer that has a three lug mount and comes with a coupler for $250.

I've seen the alpine and it looks like a really nice can.  I would say the $100 is worth it.

I have a vortex-2 which is no longer made by GT.  It's not serviceable, cant take it apart, and I've had it since 2002. It still works just as well as it did when It was new.  Unless your going to put it on a .22 machinegun I would not be concerned about take-apart cans. Gemtech is offering the user-serviceable can because theres a demand for it by suppressor users, not because it's necessary to take a .22 can apart by the average user.  If I ever put a .22 upper on my M11 machinegun, hell yeah I'm going to buy a .22 can that I can take apart because I'm going to plug it up for sure. Otherwise, it's not an issue in my personal opinion and experience with .22 cans. A dip in mineral spirits and ATF should be all the cleaning nessisary and is all I have ever done with mine aside from keeping the threads clean.

I've put countless thousands of rounds through my .22 can and it works fine still.

The outback will likely outlast your host gun providing you treat it well as with any other can.

( oh btw I would have purchased a .22 can if one was on the list too, but it's not. Maybe next year the G5-22 will be on the list.. Hint-hint-nudge-nudge)

I don't have any machine guns, and filled mine up in about 2 years.  I average about 2-4 bulk packs (500 rounds, so 1,000-2,000) a month.  They do fill up, and they do need to be cleaned if you shoot high volume.

I figured my round count at the point where I noticed it sounding louder to be around 15,000 rounds.  I noticed a difference because I have 2 Walther P22's and 2 Outback II's.  I decided to get a second one, so I could have a holstered P22 and carry a 10/22 without exchanging the suppressor from host to host.  I shot them side by side on the P22's.  One had 15,000 rounds +/- a few hundred and the other had about 2,000 rounds through it at that point.  There was a distinct difference in sound.  The one with 15,000 rounds hurt my ears.

Edit: r-2-k-b-a, I'm not trying to slight you here.  I see your posts from time to time and respect what you have to say.  From the stand point of straight information, I shoot mine on a P22 and 10-22 and it did fill up.

No offense taken, everyone has their own experience and use rates with cans.  I'm not sure that in 2 years though, the average person puts 15K through a .22. Yikes! ( and yes I'm jealous )

With that said, any can MFG will gladly service the can for little or no fee.  I've had my Vortex  8 years now and it still works great. Though, I know for a fact there's not more than 5000-6000 rd through it.  GT has said that the baffle stack is set a certain way and that the end user can't service it and know how its configured.  In a couple years I'll likely send it back and have them check it out.  It's not what I'd consider a hassle either way since it does not require an FFL to ship.  If someone wants to clean their own cans, go for the ones that take-apart, nothing wrong with it.  It's just never been an issue for me and how much I shoot.  I think the OP needs one of EACH actually.

Sorry––-these are just toys for me so only 1 .22 can. I have 1 5.56 can on the way, ordering 1 .22 can and was going to order 1 7.62 can. Thought maybe some day I might get a can for a pistol and maybe a cheap 5.56 can but was in no rush for these. Now i'm thinking of putting the 7.62 can on hold and get the Gemtech multi mount. But I can not decide so I will prob just stick with my org plan and get the 7.62 can.

I like where this is going

I have several cans, if I had to condense down to 3... I would have the Quicksand (HVT titanium) for all of my 7.62x51, 7.62x39, 6.5/6.8, 5.56x45 & 5.45, Multi-Mount for my 9mm pistols & 9mm AR, and the Alpine for 22LR.  Though I must say, it's a hard choice.  I also shoot 17HMR & 5.7, so a Spectre for 22LR sounds pretty good.

Good luck with your decision =)

Checkmate, FTW!!!  Easy choice, I just made it myself.  For $225 I just got the aluminum checkmate.  That's a takeapart, mag/17hmr rated .22 can.  Great product from a great company at a great price; seems like a no-brainer to me.

Fwiw, I already own and love an Outback II.  I just wanted another 22 can, one that'd go on my 17 hmr and that I could take apart t clean; checkmate was the winner.

Cheers, Benji

If you want the quietest smallest can go with the Outback. Skip the $200 deals.  A quiet can is a good investment.  But before you shoot through it toss it in the oven at 450 for about 20 minutes or take a torch to the rear mount to kill off the red locktite Gemtech puts on it to ensure you have to pay them $150 to take it apart to clean and replace new baffles after its clogged up after a few years of use.  Otherwise have your dealer order an Outback from gemtech with no locktite applied.  Or just go with the longer more expensive alpine.  I must say its nice to have a 5"  tiny can like the outback though.

The reason I like the Alpine over the Outback are the baffles.  The outback has K baffles, allowing for build up between the tube & the baffles.  I don't know the name for the Alpine baffles, but essentially there are spacers built into them, so the outer tube doesn't get carbon/lead build up.  This translates to taking it apart to clean every 500-1000 instead of every 200-300 like the outback.  I have an outback II that I take apart to clean, more than 200-300 rounds and it's a paint to get apart.
