I searched and read a few good things, but wanted to know who here has/uses this little suppressor?

(This is more a search for comfort/validation than advice, as I just mailed the check to my dealer...
)

FWIW, the only rimfire suppressor I have so far is an AAC Aviator. I like it a lot, but I wanted something smaller/lighter specifically for use on the smaller/lighter .22 pistols, and the Outback II is the one that kept coming up in recommendations.

Anybody running one of these? Love it? Hate it?

Thanks!

I have one any it functions great but I will not buy another sealed .22 can.  I want to be able to take it apart to keep it clean without having to send it in to the manufacture and paying them a fee.

I love mine, and you will too.  It's SUPER light and works great.  People can jaw back and forth about a couple decibels or whatever, but this can works fine.  I can shoot all day long and at worst some neighbor might think there is someone using a nail gun somewhere.  My wife has been in the greenhouse with the door open 15 feet away from me and not even known that I was shooting.  The sound of the round hitting a squirrel is WAY louder than the sound of the shot.  Eventually it will fill up, but then I can just send it to Gem Tech and they'll take it apart and clean it out back to brand new for a couple bucks; works for me.

My next "little" can will be something that I can mount to my .17hmr though, not another dedicated .22lr only can.  I have ZERO regrets about choosing/buying the Outback-II, I love that lil thing.

cheers, Benji

***GEMTECH will take in any older model OUTBACK series suppressor, gut it, and upgrade to the most current set of baffle internals for $140, which includes return shipping to you. If you have the older model pre-titanium threadmount, you may ask for the new mount as well. Your serialized component (main tube) remains the same.  No Form 5 is necessary, just a repair letter. We generally have this turned around within 30 days, usually quicker than that.  This way you don't have to mess around with cleaning or lead disposal.  If you prefer, you may request that we can leave the adhesive off of the endcaps during re-assembly so you cay take it apart yourself in the future and lovingly scrub the baffles to your hearts content.

In the thousands and thousands of OUTBACKs we've delivered year after year, we rarely see them come back "filled up", so there are certainly people well-served without need to take them apart.  If you're an honest high-round count shooter putting tens of thousands of rounds downrange (and not just a theoretical one), I generally would advise that you shoot the snot out of the OUTBACK, and if it ever does fill up, send it to us for the upgrade, get all new baffles, and start over fresh with the take-apart option.

For what I found an interesting historical juxtaposition, I happened across an interesting quote from one of the more learned guys in the silencer field, Alan Paulson, from a Machinegun News magazine eighteen years ago (Dec 1991, page 20), reviewing a sealed Ciener .22lr suppressor:

"What is the lifespan of this Ciener suppressor using clean ammo (like Federal high velocity and Hansen standard velocity target) if the can is not disassembled for cleaning?  I'm not sure.  But it should be well in excess of 10,000 rounds. That's several lifetimes - the owner and kids and grandkids and maybe even great grandkids - for most folks."

I have an outback II; it has less than 20 rounds through it so far.

One thing I noticed is the sound of the rounds smacking the mud 30 yards away was louder than the gun.

The lightest suppressor I own, and by far the first choice when shooting my 22lr pistol conversion kits.

I've found my SIG conversion kit runs better with a lighter suppressor... so I grab the lightest I have.

I've shot a few thousand rounds from mine, and it still sounds great to my ears.

Don't hesitate to buy one, you'll be happy.

I have an original Outback that I was quite happy with, but after sending it in several years ago for the upgraded baffles - I'm now Happier Happier.

Too bad they didn't have the Ti threadmount at the time or I would have had that done as well.

As the guy who does the re-builds, a new rear mount with the Ti thread insert is a part of the current re-build. Basically, we gut the suppressor and replace it with everything new except the serialized outer tube.

Interestingly, of the literally thousands of these suppressors we sell each year, we average less than 2 per month being sent back for re-building.

Sounds reasonable to me. I am currently researching suppressors for my Ruger Mk I and am trying to decide which road to travel- the OASIS or having it cut and adding an OUTBACK. Decisions, decisions.

I am happy with mine.  While I was waiting for the transfer I was doing alot of reading on suppressors and started to second guess my choice.  When I got it I went out right away to shoot it not expecting much because of what I read on the all knowing internet.  After firing the first shot out of my 22/45 I checked the barrel for a squib.  When I saw it was good to go, a huge smile appeared on my face.  You can't beat it for the price.  There are quieter suppressors out there, but the OBII is a good little can.  Also, I made mine a take apart can my self.  Very easy to do.

If you wanted something small and light, you chose wisely. The Outback II is the lightest .22lr can on the market and I don't think anyone makes one smaller, either. At 2.5 Oz, I hardly notice it on the end of my P22.  It has been incredibly quiet in my experience. Most of the sound is from action and port noise. If I hold the action closed on my 10/22 while firing CCI Standard Velocity, there is just the tiniest puff of noise. Quieter than my Daisy lever action BB gun. You already know about the downside of it being sealed, but it will take a lot of ammo to fill it up and when it gets bad, Gemtech will replace all the internals for $150 $140. I love mine, I'm sure you'll be happy.

To tide you over while you wait:

I imagine that would look pretty sharp hanging on my Ruger Mark I. Not too mechanically-inclined, I can certainly appreciate sending it back for $150 and letting them do the work, too.

Thanks for all of the feedback, guys –– sounds like it will be just the smaller/lighter package I'm looking for.

I really like my Aviator, but I envision relegating it to rifle duty and using the Outback on my pistols exclusively. I already have several .22 handguns set up as suppressor hosts...

... and I just picked up a new Buckmark Camper "Whisper" (factory threaded) the other day.

It's an Advantage Arms .22 conversion.  I sent the extended bbl off to ADCO recently for threading to use it with my suppressor.  I've only shot it a few times since I got it back, but I really like combination so far –– expect to like it even better with the smaller/lighter Outback.

Now, all smart-assness aside, the outback 2 is one of the most popular .22 cans on the planet for many reasons.   You will not regret buying an outback. Anything claiming to be ' quieter ' is negligible at best.

My Outback 2 was my first can. I bought it when I was 21, before I knew any better. I hadn't really done any research and only bought it because the local C3 had them in stock. My next rimfire suppressor will be an AAC Prodigy, which is what I should have got to begin with.

In my opinion, the outback II is a great can.  It is quiet, lightweight, and affordable.  I just prefer a take apart can for rimfires.  They really build up quick, and its nice to be able to clean in yourself.

I think the OB 2 is a great can.  I just don't understand why more people don't take it apart and clean it themselves.  Just heat it in the oven to soften the thread sealant.  I have taken apart and cleaned mine twice now.

There is a recommended cleaning solution in the owners manual for the Outback II.  This will probably extend the factory cleaning interval.  I have shot the heck out of mine, and if I ever need to send it in, the cost just won't matter compared to the fun factor.

It is downright impressive with subsonics and CB caps are very fun in the back yard!!!
12/31/2009 10:14:04 AM EDT
[#33]
I know I already posted once, but to reiterate, this can is GREAT!  I shoot it every single day.  It spends most of the time on my 10/22 with a tac sol barrel; shooting Remington subsonics is tweety bird accurate out to 100 yds easy.  It also rides on the front of my Mosquito, which keeps standard velocity subsonic.  That's the cheap way to stay subsonic.  It also goes on my Spike's .22 upper with a 5.5" barrel, which also keeps standard velocity subsonic.

This .22 can is one of THE best values and THE coolest firearm type thing you can ever buy.
cheers, Benji

Also, if you send it in once for cleaning, which is actually a rebuild, since it's cheaper for Gemtech to rebuild than to take all the time to clean the baffle stack, you can tell them not to reseal the can, and then you will be able to take it apart yourself.
