Has anyone heard about this thing?  Supposedly it's a hearing-safe dry .45 can from AAC.  I was going to pick up an Evo-45, but if this thing is hearing-safe, I'll take it instead. Is there a release date yet?

AAC's website is down, heres a cache of the old Black Box webpage.  Link

Youtube

ETA: They said this is one of two hearing-safe suppressors on the market.  Whats the other one?

short version-vaporware

long version-anticipated demand never materialized and they dumped resources into something else

of course i read all of this on the internet, so none of it may be true. i also wanted to get one, but from what i hear, don't hold your breath, your horses, the phone or the line.

It's probably bullshit just like the M14 mount for the 7.62SD.

Here's pretty much the story given by AAC regarding the Black Box. It was designed to compete for a contract for the military when they wanted to get rid of the 9mm and go back to a .45 cal sidearm. The DoD scrapped the contract so AAC stopped development and production. Doesn't mean it won't happen, just means they've got other things going on right now. They have mentioned bringing it to market in the future but so far it's all speculation as to when that might be. They also might never bring it to market. Nobody knows except the AAC folks and they aren't giving any information.

Get a smith GLFS and be done with the half-assed FS mount of the M14. You will be glad you did.

I love that weapon but the FS mounting sucks.

(I understand why its like that but it still sucks)

So you are saying that AAC DID come out with an M14 mount for the M14 ?

It's really not that awful.  It was a large suppressor- probably the largest .45 handgun can ever, and probably the most expensive.

If AAC isn't making it, it's most likely because cost would exceed value, or because there are not enough potential buyers on the market.

It's not a product for everyone, or even for many people, so it's not the devastating loss these few interested parties make it out to be.

Or if it really is, we will eventually see it on the market.

no,  the GLFS takes the place of the M14 sight on the FS, then just add the regular AAC FS

like this but with the AAC installed.

Who did your barrel cutting and threading on that?

The Black Box was being developed to meet a proposed Military need. When the need went back burner (or away completely - not sure) the development was halted. They chose to put their time and money into filling current orders and working on things like the Titan, Cyclops, and 2008 versions of several cans.

I'm sure we will see it again, but not in the short term. If you want a .45 can in the next few years, look to the Evo 45 or other competing products.

which is all very odd since AAC had a 9mm black box and a 4.6mm (MP7) black box at shot show this year......

hell, i'd like a 9mm blackbox.

but more for the weird off center design than for it being an AAC product.

maybe i should make one for myself........

Offset designs make really good sense, the only problem is figuring out a way to get the cans to index on threads without a machinist having to face every can to a size specific to a barrel to time them.

(Unless of course we don't care if they index up or sideways, but obviously, that's going to be annoying as all hell.)

I wish somebody had actually taken pictures of the AAC booth, it sounds like they had a lot of cool stuff, but information seems to only slip out "accidentally."

i could be wrong, but i think that the housing would rotate to index properly in the vertical plane. i read that about some eccentric can, not sure if it was the blackbox or not.  if not, it'd be a cool idea. hint, hint

recognition is retained by the offset design of the BLACK BOX. The
patent-pending ASAP System allows the user to adjust the silencer
alignment and zero-shift without disassembly or removal from the
weapon. The BLACK BOX preserves the balance and handling
characteristics of the pistol, making full-time suppression a reality.
The extraordinary reduction of muzzle report eliminates the need for
ear protection, preserves field communications, and masks the
location of the shooter.
