Been thinking of getting one for my 1911 for some time. Recently aquired a USP in .40, im planning on trading for a .45 USP.

I've really been wanting to see what happens of the AAC Black Box, but I'm starting to think i may be waiting a long time.

What would the "hive mind" recommend? Preferrably first hand experience. I've had good luck with Gemtech in the past, but i've heard of issued with the Blackside not always cycling properly. Is a LID type device really a must?

The only 45 pistol I have shot was the MK23 with the Knights can on it. It was cool as hell and a way big package.

My reccomendation would be to buy a 9mm

AAC Evo-45.  The ASAP piston design of the AAC Evo series cans offers reliability with a variety of host weapons without having to change things like springs in the host.  I've seen and shot the Gemtech Blackside and think it is a very nice can, but I just prefer a boostered can.  YMMV.  I've seen other non-boostered .45 cans break host weapon slides.

The Blackbox project will happen, but I wouldn't count on anything before the year is out.

Boostered cans are the only way to go.

The last shoot that I was at had an unboostered can and it worked about 90% of the time with reduced rate springs.

I'm very happy with the SWR HEMSII on both my TAC and Mk23. Lightweight, very quiet, and superb customer service. Mostly, I shoot wet (gel), but have no issues shooting it dry without hearing protection.

...Not a big fan of my KAC (have adapters for USP and Mk23). It may meter lower than most, but it sounds louder to my ear.

Doh!  Forgot about the HEMSII.

It is a nice can.

And the 9mm benchmark is....AAC EVO-9?

I have a PT-92 in 9mm. So that is always an option.

My SWR HEMS2 works VERY well on my HK MK23 , Sig 220C , and Glock21.

No malfs, no issues whatsoever, and very easy to change the LID device for different threads.

My Gemtech Blackside works great on my Mk23.  My brother likes to limp-wrist it sometimes so it jams frequently for him.

That's what I'd recommend - although I haven't seen any other cans in person so I'm kinda biased.

See... i've had great luck with my Viper .45.

But i've heard complaints abotu the Blackside not always working that well. I'd rather have something that always works, than something that needs to be tuned to each piece.

I was watching a blackside this weekend.  It worked most of the time that I was watching it on a 1911 w/ a reduced rate recoil spring.

I have no malfunction whatsoever on my 1911 with original HEMS.  Probably my favorite, moreso than 92F with AAC Phantom---simply because of my 230 gr reload.

I remember being at the range with Joe a few years ago when he started working on the .45 cal suppressor.  Hearing the sound and comparing the sound quality to my 9mm Omega, I was very impressed.  When I noticed that the .45 cal suppressor didn't meter as well as my 9mm suppressor, Joe said it was due to a frequency shift in the .45 cal suppressor which made it "sound" quieter.  If I hadn't been reading the meter myself, I would have thought he was full of crap.

Joe is an absolute genius and the HEMSII is one SW-E-E-T can.
