What's your favorite and, most importantly, effective silencer cleaner?

I just received my HALO and fired a quick 20 rounds through it to function-test it and I looked down it and those few rounds already coated the inside in carbon.

Thanks.

I don't clean my 223 can.

Matter of fact, I don't clean my .22 cans either

I do scrub down the mounting surfaces, though.

Stop looking in it, it does not need cleaning.

So everyone here just lets the carbon build-up in it without getting it out at some point?

the light carbon coating is what you call break in. most cans will actually perform a bit better once they're dirtied up slightly.

Your 223 can will not require any cleaning after on 20 rounds.   Refer to the manual about with what and when to clean it.  223 cans probably don't really need to be cleaned anyway...

22LR cans...that's a whole other story...

Any buildup problems in a centerfire cartridge shooting copper jacketed bullets is all in your mind, so just get over it now.

So, are you saying that I should ignore the instructions from my suppressor mfg. about cleaning after 250 rounds?

I've cleaned mine by soaking in a container full of WD-40 which is one recommended cleaning solution/procedure.

I clean mine with Hoppes and Breakfree after every 10 shots.

Be careful with aluminum cans---my manual from AAC says that many common solvents will harm the aluminum. If your can is stainless, then normal solvents should work.

When I do clean them, which is not very often. I use a mixture of KROIL and mineral spirits. After doing this, make sure you flush out the Kroil with acetone. As Kroil gets really smokey when your can gets hot.

Well I confirmed what you all were saying.  Gemtech does not advise the cleaning of .223 cans (at least not the HALO) because it is hard to make sure all the solvent is out.

They do recommend that you clean the area that swallows the flash hider or mount area with a copper brush soaked in WD-40.

Since it came straight from them I think I will follow what you have all said and leave it alone.

And FWIW, I wasn't planning on cleaning it after 20 rounds, I just noticed that if it was that dirty after 20 rounds then I did not want to see what it looked like after 200+.
