I'm looking into putting an M4-2000 onto my 11.5" AR-15, but yesterday morning I was warned against using a suppressor due to the excessive blow back.  According to this individual, the pressure accumulated in the can and then dumped back through the barrel / gas system ultimately burns your hands up.  He advised against doing it for that reason alone.

Can anyone give me the skinny on this?  I want the can and I want to sell my chief on the idea of outfiting all or our entry team's weapons this way as well.  What I need to know is 1.) is the information true?  2.) is it fixable and if so, how?)

Thank in advance for any help you can provide.

Your info is bunk. I have a few cans and one of them is an AAC M42000 in 5.56. The gas back pressure will speed up a full auto some, and the back pressure does increase. But the rest of that info is bunk and I would not take any more info from that person. The back pressure will creep back to the shooter from under the charging handle, but if you have eye protection on, this is not an issue. It is just a slight amount. Or you could use a blast guard made by "Battlecloth". But, as far as burning your hands, that is just plain BS. Hope this helps.

Or to do more, because the amount he is doing isn't working.

In all seriousness there is some blow back, it isn't that bad, I have a PRI Gasbuster charging  handle and that helps, but I still get some. Let me add in that I'm left handed, so that makes it worse. The worst that happens is that I get some stinging in my eyes when I do mag dumps.

Surely if you are in Texas you can get a demo of the can on a gun from a dealer. Perhaps you can talk him into demoing a Glock 18, a Sig552, UMP, etc.

Well, I suspected that the info was in the least exhaggerated, but I need to talk to the source and see exactly what it was that he really did say to the Capt.  This same source was singing the praises of the exact same set-up (Colt semi-only 11.5 SPR with threaded on Gemtech suppressor and tuned by Specialized Armaments) back in Feb when we both attended the Colt Armorer's class that Ken Elmore teaches.  He had nothing but good things to say then, and in fact helped me to get the ball rolling on getting our team transitioned to shorter barrels with suppressors.

The Captain, on the other hand, looked at the cost and seemed less than excited about pushing forward during the budget process next year.  A few weeks later, he shares the above information with me thus indicating that he really isn't interested in going forward at all with the idea.

My plan of action now is to aquire my own can for my 11.5" gun and demo it to the team (and chief) myself.  I have an AAC M4-2000 at my local dealer with my name on it, but I'm trying to decide whether or not to go ahead and do the LLC thing finally or just get this one the way I've done with my other NFA items in the past (the long, slow way).

It wouldn't be the first time that I've had to buy my own stuff that the department wouldn't provide........
