What is the real advantage that an AR with full floating barrel has over an identical rifle with std forened? 1/4 inch reduction in group size? 1/2 inch reduction in group size? I know that for a bolt action it makes a big difference (enough that most of my rifles are free floated). How much more does the free floating raise the cost of the rifle over standard?

IMHO free floating an AR15 is the single most useful modification you can make if accuracy interests you.  Group size may not change, but the groups do not wander with sling or fore-end pressure.  A simple aluminum tube floater is not very expensive and is relatively easy to install.  Others disagree, but I have had very good experiences using free floating tubes on my AR15 rifles.  Watch-Six
