Yesterday, I ran across a rifle I've never heard of or seen before.
It's was a Red Rock ATR-1. When I first saw it, I thought it was a FN-Fal with a 16" barrel. I picked it up and looked at it and it was marked .223/5.56 caliber and uses AR magazines. It looked like a miniature Fal. I almost bought it just cause it was so unique. Has anyone ever heard of one? Know anything about it. I'm still searching Google and not having much luck. |

Yes, that's who made it, and QC problems were very common with their companies. I have an old SW5 that I got working correctly with HK parts. Back then it was the only option available for an MP5 clone (besides the uber-expensive HK94). The rifle in question is a copy of the Imbel MD series: Springfield Armory imported some years ago as the SAR 4800 (and SAR 48 prior to the '89 import ban). http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148267 The Springfield import would be the better quality rifle, and a Daewoo would be superior to either IMHO. They're definitely different though. Would be neat to have, but not worth the money I think, unless you score a killer deal. |
| There was one on Gunbroker a couple of weeks ago. Asking price was $1200 with no bidders. There was a thread on the FALfiles about this listing. While the aluminum receiver was a deathtrap with .308 it was considered safe when built with pistol caliber and .223 in mind. ATR only made a few (less than 200). The Springfield SAR4800 is a much better choice even though price is going to be $1800 approx. I've looked for one for a long time to go with my 308's. |

Red Rock used to be Bobcat Arms who manufactured MP5 clones from parts made by Todd Bailey/Special Weapons/Coharie Arms, and apparently even shared space with one of Todd Bailey's companies. That relationship dogged Red Rock/Bobcat since people thought they were just another Bailey company. From what I understand, their MP5 clones were halfway decent.
They started on the 5.56 Fal when their relationship with Todd Baily/Coharie Arms went sour, and made people question their quality, on top of the actual quality issues and weight of the gun. Its actually an interesting lesson in firearms market research. On message boards you used to hear a fair amount of people articulating desire for a 5.56 Fal, but when one was announced by Red Rock the response was lukewarm. |
