I ordered a pistol from an online vendor today. When I added it to the cart and put in my CC info, it was $588. When I placed the order itself, mere minutes after adding to the cart, the price had changed to $612. Naturally I was confused and a bit miffed so I sent a message asking for a credit of $26 and explained that I did not like being baited and switched and would not do business with a company that would do so. A bit later I received a reply.

Thank you for contacting us, and I'm sorry to hear a recent price change caught you off guard.

At <vendor name>, we obtain our stock from multiple sources and distributors, each with varying prices. To keep our prices low, we only mark up by a small fixed percentage rate increase from the distributor the stock arrives from. Prices may go up or down daily if the stock that arrives is from a different source that had different costs.

I'm very sorry if you missed out on a better deal through our store, but our business model does not allow for a price guarantee. When an order is placed, you are locked in at that price.

I have routed your order up to management for cancellation.

I then received an order cancellation notice. So now I get to wait a week to buy from somewhere else.

I took the cancellation as confirmation of using the ol bait and switch.

TLD; Bought a gun, price changed while in cart, asked for credit, told to fuck off.

I know, I know, CSB.

Are they a vendor here?

If not, I say inform us on who, since you are already getting the refund. I dont like bait and switch. $600 is not sofa change for me, so I value places that are not upstanding with customer service.

It sounds like they are telling the truth, you must of added the item and checked out in the middle of an update.  Just because you add an item to your cart at price X, doesn't 'lock' that price in.  Lots of online dealers, even outside of firearms, have similar pricing/inventory systems.

I would of suggested replying back and ask if they would honor that price once that particular vendor has another in stock.

What I would be upset at is if on the confirmation page it had price X and then they charged your card for X+$26 -> that's another issue.  You didn't have to hit confirm.

It is possible that they were telling the truth, but as you say, I was upset that the price never changed on the confirmation page. There was no notification of a price change and I only noticed it when I was checking against my bank transactions a short time later. I did tell them in a reply that all they had to do was notify me before actually charging my card and I likely wouldn't have cancelled. They didn't even bother to reply.

It's ok though, I found the same pistol for $540 (Walther PPQ Navy BTW)shipped a few hours later, so it seems to have worked out for me. I got a better deal and I now know to avoid them in the future.

Is it against forum rules to name this company?

Optics Planet tried to pull that shit on me 4-5 yrs ago when I was buying an EOTech.

I chose which optic that I wanted and clicked "buy"  and submitted my credit card info for the amount shown on my screen.  10 min later I get email order confirmation but for 40-50bux more.  I did NOT agree to a purchase at the higher price.

"Computer glitch" they said when I immediately called customer service, "price you were quoted on your computer was incorrect" (was likely their cost).  Tough shit.  If you change the price on me after I OK the deal and bill me for a greater amount without my permission, that's retail fraud, I reminded them.  It got fixt after about a half hr of talking to supervisors.

FOP.

For some reason this thread reminds me of when USCav had a pricing problem, I think it was for EOTECH sights.

Anyway they were WELL under priced and everyone was butt-hurt when they refused to honor the obviously wrong price.

ETA: Just to clarify, I'm not saying this is the same thing. Just reminded me of it.
