So I am on the hunt for my new Christmas present. I am looking for something in .308/7.62Nato.

I was 90% sure I was going to go with a FAL, however after stumbling into the precision rifle forum I am now getting the itch to build a premium long range precision rifle.

When it comes to just pure fun to shoot at the range what would you guys choose? I want to add a new hobby so the idea of precision shooting sounds fun.

Thanks!

Precision is more enjoyable for me.

I would personally go with a bolt action for range fun, semi-auto's are not as accurate and you will burn ammo instead of trying to be precise.

2 totally different rifles for different roles.

What do you want to use it for?

That may be true for the FAL, but this myth has been dispelled time and time again.

OP, if you have money to burn look at a Larue OBR or a KAC SR25.

My first rifle was an FAL (century arms R1A1 sporter, inch pattern). It was accurate and fun to shoot, but it was a used parts gun. I no longer own it.
My Remington 700P is still in my collection

I've had a Rem PSS and now I have 3 Quality FALs
My DSA OSW or my other 18 inch para FAL is much more fun than a bold gun.
Eats any ammo and is accurate enough.
Can be used for hunting and short to 800 yard shooting.

But, again it depends on what you want it for. If you want sub MOA and are willing to spend $1.00 to $1.50 a round for quality accurate ammo then you want a bolt gun.

FALs are awesome, but for precision, look at the Ruger Precision Rifle. Great tube style rifle with a solid emerging aftermarket.

Thanks for the replies!

I honestly plan on owning both in time. I am still leaning towards the FAL since the normal shooting area is 30 mins from me as opposed to the long range one which is 1 hour.

I have my shit and giggle guns for burning through ammo which is why the bolt action appeals to me a bit in the sense that I can custom build it over time and truly hone it in.

But then again I will own both, and with the way things are looking I maybe should go for the semi-auto before any BS legislation tries to make its way down the tube.

Go with FAL style rifle first.  Invest in extra mags.   Then take your time building your long distance rifle.

308 AR   FTW....best of both worlds

If I'm restricted to your 2 choices, I like precision...bolt gun

I had an inch pattern L1A1 that was built by a supposedly responsible local smith (since has left the area).. no claim as to being 922.r compliant were made (don't assume)...I had to make the parts switch.... just check your source first... my opinions... if you are going to shoot fixed sights, the sights on the metric guns (STG58) are much better... much more nose heavy than my M1A or AR10.... aftermarket scope mounts are not nearly as foolproof as the AR10 rail... inch pattern magazines were getting a lot harder to find than the metrics, but I think the polymer companies have that covered....

If a Scar17 is in the equation I'd go with a SCAR17

Well, with the current super, unpredictable, tide-ever-turning "political climate," I'd get the FAL while the getting is good.  We all know that bolt guns aren't half as wicked as full auto rifles with bullet buttons and 500rd magazines!  Plus, you can never really go wrong with an FAL.

Lastly, since you're getting the precision rifle "itch," you'll want to consider the Ruger Precision Rifle (as some have already suggested).  However, if you wait a little while, you'll be able to start picking them up used for a couple hundo cheaper than they already are.  That is the win/win option, IMHO.

I would go with the 700, always had a soft spot for bolt guns, they are what I broke in on centerfire with.

How far can you shoot? I can only shoot to about 450 yards and for me "precision shooting" has gotten a little boring. I could always chase tighter and tighter groups but it just doesn't hold my interest.

May FALs keep me interested more.

Depends on your range. If less 200 yards get the fal unless you like shooting for
the smallest group. If you can shoot out to 800-1000 get the remington. Also
Fun because you can get into load development. Key word neck sizing. Also
You can mod it as you go along. New triggers. Firing pins. Chassis.

If you want a rifle to do both get a scar or ar10.

You've got all the time in the world for bolt guns.  FAL kits are drying up.

And they're purdy.

I can't speak for the Remington 700 (or any other precision bolt gun for that matter), but my FAL is a pleasure to shoot. Commercial .308 has come down to a little but more than .223 prices so it's almost affordable to shoot. Unfortunately the cheap surplus stuff has dried up though.

I'd say get the FAL now while they're still out there. An 18" barrel full stock or para would be about perfect.

Best of both worlds.

FAL if you want a nostalgic 308, Ar10 if you want a little more accurate and still semi, bolt gun if you are going for dead accuracy.

Should I say something about a M1A.

I'm with Larry on this.  Remington's QC has gotten so bad that you are easily better off buying a Cnetury Arms gun and getting good results.

Get an A Model AR-10 from Armalite.

Having built a Mega recently and having to chase my tail on a couple of weird issues ( all solved ) I would have saved a LOT of time and heartache and money had I just bought this:

But they didn't have them at the time......
