I forget where I got it, but crushed walnut shells is what I have in my rest bags

I filled mine with oil dry

I filled mine with aquarium gravel. Works great  and no dust.

I line them with plastic to reduce spills if the bags are cut or the seams are torn.

I've used large Ziplock bags inside, to prevent spills as mentioned above.

Regarding your second question: what is your goal?  If you need weight for a Lead Sled, then lead shot or sand would be best.  If making a rest, then the lighter weight options mentioned above (walnut shells, the "oil dry" I assume is Kitty Litter that you would use to clean up oil spills in garage??) should work as well and be easier to move around.  The Walnut shells can be found in pet stores as a liner for lizard cages (if you reload you likely have some for tumbling media...)

Walnut shell is pretty heavy-  which is why I decided to give up on the sand.

Best advice.

I used air soft pellets which worked pretty well.

But others have used some kind of "hobby" pellet that is very similar and much cheaper so I'd look into that.

That's a damn good idea and it wouldn't matter if it got wet, unlike some of the other media mentioned.

Soulman is correct; decide what you purpose for the bag is and then decide on media.

I use poly beads... light weight yet firm as a rock, getting wet is no issue.

Cut the legs off an old pair of pants, jeans or twill.   Sew up the ends and Bob's your uncle.

This...... I have numerous shot bags made from old Levi's pant legs... tough as heck. I made some in different fill levels, so they can conform easier.

DO NOT use lead shot in them, the lead can turn to dust.... easy way to get lead poisoning.

Steel shot works well... just don't get it wet....rusty dust.

I used a cut off leg from a pair of old jeans. I filled it with ground walnut shells from petco, same stuff I tumble my brass in.

I use shotgun primers in old shot bags for lead sled weight.
