Hit up the indoor range this morning and when I was sweeping up my brass (I reload) I found this bullet around my feet. I was the only one on the range shooting .45 today and it was the same style plated bullet I had loaded the night before. Clear rifling marks and dents so it definitely went downrange. Did this little bastard bounce back at me?!

yep, I've seen it before. Not unusual, that's why I wear eye protection.

A young spectator at a IPSC match was killed a couple of years back by a "bounce back" bullet.

Many years ago I was in the NSS-A.  I was competing in a shoot.  These consist of 8 man teams in timed events.  A guy in the team next to ours felt a blow to the rim of his kepi and a 500 grain 58 caliber lead minnie ball fell at his feet.

I have been hit by .45 ricochets before.  Shooting bowling pins, it is quite common.  Yes, eye protection is a must.

That bullet?  Well, it didn't bounce back, it hit a curved surface of some kind.

Bullets can do crazy things, eye protection is a must.

When that happens at our range it generally means the sand backstop is loaded, and it needs a remediation/recycle to be done.

I had a 7.62x39 bounce off a steel plate and hit me in the side. It did not hurt but it did scare me a little. My BIL was shooting his cap and ball revolver and one bounced back and hit the garage behind us. We laughed it off.

I did a pistol class that used a PD range. Numerous bullets came rolling back to us. Something had to be up with their trap.

Ive had a jacket bounce back and hit me on the fingertip. It swoll up real big and my fingernail fell off but grew back a long time later.
I dug out the jacket. It was right under the surface and looked like something you find while panning gold.
Ouch

I had bought a new 45 and got a free hour of range time.

Did a double tap and received both bullets in the shins. One in each shin.

Like it was stated above the traps were full.

Slugs were under the skin and popped out like a lead zit.

I've been hit by fragments numerous times.

Usually it's because some idiots have a metal target frame or dueling tree set up at 10 yards.

We used to shoot at an old rock quarry for 3 gun matches.  We've experienced our share of different projectiles and projectile fragments biting us.

I've had .45s bounce back at me before, including one that caught me square in the nuts. Yes it sucked as bad as it sounds.

Yep, we had a cast .38 bullet come back at us a couple of weeks ago. Hit another bullet in the backstop, it's since been mined

With proper lead bullets and proper target design, 10 yards is safe.

Not uncommon.  Usually seen at steel shoots, which is one reason I no longer go to steel shoots.

I have had the steel cores from surplus 7.62x54R come back at me while shooting steel plates. They never made it all the way back to the line (IFAIK) but while shooting at 100yards, these cores would kick up sand inside the 25 yard line. Not every shot but enough that we went back to shooting the 200 yard plates.

I've seen somebody at a match standing behind the shooter get hit in the neck when a .45 bullet apparently bounced off the backstop. It left a mark but luckily wasn't going fast enough to do any real damage.

Took a 9mm round to the mouth/jaw. I didn't even notice at first until I turned around after clearing the magazine and the people behind me were like "you're bleeding....like a lot".

I got hit in the ribs by a .45 gap round. Thought it was brass up until I saw it rolling around at my feet.

Didn't hit me hard enough to bruise

Many years ago I had a mid range .44 mag JHP come back and hit me in the collar bone at about 15-20 yard.
Hurt like hell but didn't break the skin but, if it would've hit me in the eye...

That's why I always wear eye pro.

Had quite a few. 45 ACP's come back also but was never hit by them.

All at outdoor ranges with dirt backstops.
