I am looking for something with better low light performance .   I would like to spend under $500 , the gun currently has an older Nikon on it. a 3x9x40 with a 1 inch tube . I am willing to change mounts and rings and go 30 mm. I would consider an illuminated reticle as well.  I hunted this year in more cloudy and rainy days . I also want to replace the older optics on Sako.

My experience is to go to a fixed power scope.  4 fewer lenses than variable scopes, so at least 6% less light loss (given equal lens material and coatings) The Nikon 4x and 6x Monarchs are some of the best low light scopes I've owned (if you can find them)  discontinued

Google "twilight factor" and "exit pupil".

The Weaver 6X is noticeably brighter than my Leupold 2x7 scope.

A recently released Weaver 8X scope has a 56 mm objective.  Plug those specs into the twilight factor and exit pupil equations to compare with other scopes, I think you will find the Weaver 8X stacks up very well.

I recently purchased a Leupold VX3 3.5x10x40 for my deer rifle and am very impressed with low light performance.  My buddy and I were looking at a small doe? 50yds at dusk and could not tell if it had any spikes.  Brought up my new Leupold and it was clear as day.  You pay for more and higher quality coatings for better light transmission.  They all looked the same at Cabella's, it's really hard to shop and compare for low light performance in the store.  I'm very satisfied with this scope, it ran around $450 with a friends and family discount, list is $500.  I will be adding the load specific CDS turret when I mount it on my Elk rifle, you just turn the turret to the correct yards and it's dead on.

Fixed power for sure will help.  The older Nikons are pretty good scopes!  You may not be trading up.
