My sons wanting to buy his first rifle and is tossed up between the Ruger American rifle in .308 and the savage 10  (I believe, the one with the accu trigger that's just above the axis) also in .308. I don't have much experience, or any experience at all with either and was hoping maybe you guys could help him purchase his first rifle
Thanks for any help.

flip a coin and have him get the one that feels better to him.  I personally don't like the way the safety is nested in the tang of the savage....it's no problem for target shooting but I find it a pain when hunting in cold weather with gloves on and you have to break your grip to take it off which is a problem if you need to do any fast shooting at game.

A little more after market support for the Savage right now.  It may be handy if he wants to upgrade bits over time.

Savage all the way.
Back when I was growing up, the general consensus was that Savage was just cheap stuff and only folks who couldn't afford a Remmy or Ruger got them.  That was until I actually shot one.  Most accurate I have seen out of the box, THEN.... I caught the Barrel Nut Flu!  It is so damn easy to reconfigure or rebarrel your savage with simple tools to most any caliber provided it fits the action and it is very addicting!

I have a Ruger American in 308.  Very happy with it.  I think Ruger is going to sell a lot of these.

Either one is a good pick, I'd vote Ruger if you don't plan on upgrading anything at all.  If you do, get the Savage.

If you're looking for something a little heavier and in my opinion, a little nicer, look at the Rem 783 (doubles as a range/tactical rifle).

Check out howas, they make the actions for weatherby and they can be had for super cheap with tons of features.

Between the two I would go with Savage as well.

The Savage is a very modular design.  It's also been around forever so there is huge aftermarket support in terms of accessories, replacement barrels, stocks etc.

The Ruger American is a step above the Axis, but the Savage 10 is several steps above the Ruger.

Hey thanks everyone for the input! He decided on the Savage 11/111 trophy hunter in .308 topped with a Nikon 3-9x40. Loving it so far
