Wife bought me  a Remington 700 sps vamit in .308. This is my first bolt action and need a scope for it. The rifle will be mainly used for 500 yard or less target shooting an some hunting. I really don't know much about optics just looking for a good one. Price up to 500 bucks. Thank you

IMHO in the $400- $500 price range you can just about role the dice and pick what magnification and features you want and you'll get something very good for both variables and fixed power.  The one that I hear that is a real cut above in the nice middle group of scopes is the Leupold FX3 6x42.  I have seen tests where the optical quality is up there with the $1000 range scopes.  YMMV

ETA:  most people shy away from fixed power scopes but if your staying 500yds or less I bet the FX3 6x42 would work very well for you.  you can even get different reticles and turrets from the Leupold custom shop.

Save 200.00 and go with the 3-15 SWFA SS. Damn good scopes...

I'd likely end up with a VX3 3.5-10X. Have 2 already

Look into the Vortex Viper 6.5-20x or SWFA SS 3-9x

Also, (in my experience) a $700+ scope is easier to sell (and holds it's valuable much better) than a $400 scope.

I have had a 6X18 Luepold on my 700VS in 308 for years and never have looked back, I recently bought a 10XSS on the EE and am impressed with it so far.

Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 -- and you'll have change left over for ammo.

The glass is nice.
The tube is a 1" tube, which is not great, but OK.
Fixed eye relief and forgiving eye box.
