I just put a aac-sd .308 together. Bell and Carlson m40 stock,SS 10x scope, getting inletted for badger m5 soon etc etc. 308 is impossible to find right now, and im not payin $2.50 a round on gunbroker. I see 243 in stock almost everywhere. Im reading good things about 243, and could grab a bunch of ammo locally while its still on the shelves. I love my r700, but im just looking for something to throw a scope on and shoot. I don't need anything fancy, or something that Im going to want to fix up. My friend has an axis in 308 and really likes it. Local shop has the axis in stock for a decent price. Should I fo?

I did earlier this week.  Found one in .223 and I really like it for the price.  I will probably shoot it a great deal and not burn anywhere near the ammo of an AR.  I had debated .243 or .223 in my mind for quite a while and came to the conclusion that .223 would be cheaper in the long run and still more than meet my needs.

I think the Ruger American offers more gun for your money over the axis.  They run about the same price, and the American has some really nice features, like a bedded stock and detachable mags.  I dont know if the axis rifles have as good of barrels as the other savage guns, but the ruger has a hammer forged barrel.  Now this is just based off of reviews that I have read and watched, I have never owned or shot either of these rifles

The Axis does have a detachable mag, and the barrel is the same taper barrel as other savage rifles, just matte finsished.  The Axis at Walmart was $90 less than the Ruger.

Ruger is made in the USA that alone is worth the difference in price.

.243 is a great round and will work for paper punching out to 1000 yards with the right bullets.

So where is the Savage made then?

I think what makes the Ruger worth the extra money is the aluminum bedding in the stock.  Most these budget rifles come with such flimsy stocks its nice to see one that looks to be a better quality.

Not to mention Ruger likes to copy other companies instead of offering their own firearms.

The big knock on the Axis currently there are no aftermarket stocks available, but I believe that is going to change very quickly as the Axis is the budget line for Savage.  I bought an Axis 223 back in October for my 300BO project.  If you don't mind doing some work to the stock, you can have a light rifle that won't break the budget.  I placed some metal rods to strengthen the forend of the stock.  I also cut it down two inches to make the LOP fit my needs better.

Not sure why someone said Rugers are made in the US as Savages rifles are also made in the US.

I looked pretty hard at the Axis a few months back.  It seemed like the metal on them is good, but that stock is hideous.  To me, it feels like a cheap BB gun stock.  It was definitely the deciding factor against it for me.
