| I was wondering if any members realized their firearms collection was too large and decided to thin out their collection? I own eight firearms now and want to add a few more. However, since I shoot only a few times per month, I wonder if the guns I buy will just be safe queens. Was there ever a point when you looked at your firearms and realized you weren't shooting them and they were just collecting dust? If so, did you sell some and only keep the guns you actually shoot? |

I try to keep my collection sized to fit in the safe. It annoys me when it grows too big. So I sell--but then the next cool rifle comes along...
I've sold a few guns that I regret, but for the most part, I was done with them by the time they left the collection. |

I would rather have a platform w/ modular accessories that I can use. This is partially due to space, other part is expensive taste, and availability of $$. |

I have thinned the herd from time to time, usually selling a few to fund another( I try not to use regular budget money for guns- while ammo and reload ing components are part of my everyday budget)
My brother years ago wisely told me when I was buying a safe: Think about how many guns you have now- Consider how many more you might buy in the next ten years Take that number and multiply by 2 That number equals the smallest safe you should buy. Right now my 32 gun safe is maxed out- FYI if you place guns one muzzle up the the next muzzle down you can about double your safe capacity |

I didn't decide I had too many guns, I decided I REALLY wanted a certain rifle. I went through what I had and decided what I could part with. Everything I sold was stuff that had not been to the range in years. It was well worth it when my new toy came home! +1 on this. I've been shopping a hi-power clone and a Ishy .308 Enfield for a few months in hopes of bringing home a CZ527 carbine. For me its more of a balancing test to determine what I want, what I'm actually using and how much I'd kick myself if I got rid of it. |

I've replaced a few guns through the years as my tastes have evolved. I've sold one of those 1911 carbine conversions and a Mini-14. The carbine conversion I never really warmed up to. The Mini was a fine gun, but was a little redundant and a little outclassed by my AR. Those two are it.
The guns I have now I am into total love with. No matter what new or special firearms I come across, I can't get rid of any of them. Most of them are among my first purchases. |

at one time I had 10 lever action rifles, wish I was able to keep them and still fund reloading equipt and handgun building projects. Sold off some rifles and now have done 2 handguns builds and working on a 3rd.. just bought a Benelli Super Sport to shoot sporting clays with, may have to adjust my collection again to fund shotgun reloading equipt....

I had an insane amount of guns at one point (50?)
all kinds of mosins, lots of mausers of different nationalities and all US military MBRs from the trapdoor to the AR Sold most of them, Kept 2 M1s, My ARs and bought a x39 saiga to replace a disappointing Mini-30 My big passion right now is my flintlocks and Civil war guns. as interests change..my collection changes, I have my hands on hundreds of guns......for me thats the magic of the hobby |

Yep. I decided I wanted a .300 Blackout but didn't like adding another caliber so I got rid of two, my 7.62 SKS and 7.62x54r Mosin
I have tried several different handguns and have finally figured out I really only like 1911's and 9mm Glocks so that's all I have plus one LCP I try to keep it simple. .22LR, 12GA, 5.56, 9mm and .45 The .300 is a wildcard. Knowing me, I won't keep it but for now I love the idea of a 7.62 round out of an AR that I can use the exact same mags and everything, just have to swap the barrel....don't ask me why I bought an entire gun instead

Earlier this year, I was living in Northern Alberta where my firearm 'needs' were based around a long deer season, limited watefowl opportunities and a high bear population. The range was also close by and used little by the locals so I had plenty of time to buy and use 'range toys' like AR's and handguns. I recently moved several hundred miles South and East where there are gophers, few bears, a short deer season and many waterfowling opportunites provided by the family farm which is about a half hour's drive form my current home.
As such, I've sold off a number of rifles and a couple handguns to fund newer purchases. I no longer needed a SBS to go hiking with as the nastiest animal in these parts is a skunk or a coyote. Sold it, a VZ58 and a GP100 to free up some space in the cabinet and some funds in the wallet to buy a spare bbl for my Maverick 88 and a .223. My Grandad's guns are starting to come into my possession so I've sold off a few of my beaters in redundant calibers so that I can get some use out of the old gems. |

when I hit 50 I think I sold 30 rifles, shotguns, pistols ect. Lots of folk's think your nutz sellin off stuff!
I think I just sold about 7 complete uppers the last few weeks. So at 54, soon to be 55 to me it was the right move. It's everyones own decission in life. I have no children so I could'nt leave anything once I'm gone. Alot of us here probably never use 1/2 the stuff they own. so really a person needs to evaluate there own needs, then go from there. most of us older guy's know the man upstairs can take ya in a heartbeat. I have lost many friends to heart failure, cancer, ect. |

Was there ever a point when you looked at your firearms and realized you weren't shooting them and they were just collecting dust? If so, did you sell some and only keep the guns you actually shoot? When I reached a certain number (in age and in number of guns) I decided to start to trade them or trade up. I have gone down a bit from the peak, but it is creeing up again. The first was the hardest and now once I decide to get something I really try to get rid of one. Sometimes I fail and the numbers get larger... but once gone, I really don't regret the decision because I have bought better guns to replace the ones which go. And new guns are fun to get and play with and own, at least for a while. When you run out of gun safe room then either you get another safe or you make some decisions. At 8 you really have only just started.... I have a hard time deciding what to keep now, the low hanging fruit is gone, all that is left is quality or sentimental, as in gifted from my brother. Think about what you buy and do not buy on impulse. Nobody is perfect and I break my own rules all the time... |

In the last couple of years I've sold: Glock 23, H&K USP .40, Browning A-bolt .300WSM, Sig P229 9mm, Ruger SR9 9mm, Stag Mforgery, Ruger P345 .45acp, Tula TOZ-122 .308 Bolt, Gibbs Enfield .303 bolt, 2 Ruger Mini 14's and just this week a Tommy gun (Semi Auto.)
At one point I also never thought I would sell a gun- but then decided to consolidate calibers (got rid of .40SW pistols) then I decided to consolidate models(only Glocks & Kahrs in 9mm & 1911's in .45) then I sold off guns I hadn't shot in a couple yrs. I have always used the proceeds to buy other firearms. |

I am 54 and have only ever sold 1 gun
I know I dont use them all, and while they might not all be "investments" that go up in value, guns are highly liquid being able to be turned into cash quickly and some have gone way up in value I am sure I will start selling them off and passing them down to my kids at some point, but not yet |
|
I just sold ten to lighten the load and assist with my escape from Connecticut. Fuck this place. As for reasons to sell... there are times when one must upgrade or get a piece that compliments another. Thinning out the herd is ok, but a collection of eight doesn't really need thinning. |
| I've bought and sold plenty, I get tired of guns hanging around that I don't shoot. I really only have two or three that are sentimental, and they're really not worth much. I only regret selling two guns. A like new Marlin camp 9, and a Century CETME that I had bought for a song. |
|
I've considered it. I've sold a Polish underfolder, which I kind of regret, and a Hungarian Hi-Power clone which I don't. A while ago I was wanting to get rid of most of my mil-surps but I am glad I didn't now that I'm hoarding my defense calibers and getting into reloading. Tailoring loads for my mil-surps seems like a good way to start reloading. That being said... I want a Garand badly and don't really see any way of getting one other than selling some of my collection. |
